Thinking About Ferguson Missouri - Some White Residents Are Also

It seems that this week we will hear the Grand Jury's decision about whether to send a Ferguson Police Officer to trial for the death of Michael Brown. As the area prepares for the aftermath of the decision, we all know that eventually things will go back to normal.

That's the problem! Sadly the "normal" situation is distrust.

Nearby Ferguson, in a white suburb, there is a group trying to understand the racial issues better in order to bridge the gap. The group "Witnessing Whiteness" meets to discuss white privilege and talk about how that differs from the experiences other races have in their daily lives.

This week, CBS National News did a short piece on this group. I'm proud to say that my son's mother-in-law has been a member since it's inception and is helping to facilitate the start of other Witnessing Whiteness groups. She does not speak on this video. (she has shoulder length white hair with glasses and sits to the right of the female facilitator)

Here is the link to the video below, I can't seem to imbed it properly

I was going to tell you the video wasnt working and reread your comment and realized you inserted a link to the vid. OK Saw it and it does bring up some valid points but until we ALL become accountable for our actions and quit blaming others I am not sure how much can actually change

But change is a slow process....  how many of us 30 years ago would have figures on having gay marriages legalized in so many states?

Karen,

We all long for change and acceptance.  Many have been bred with prejudices and don't take the time to think for themselves, and even those who are working on unlearning still find themselves acting automatically, like a knee jerk reaction.  I think Dagny Eason makes an excellent point.  A

Some areas are so much slower that others with the acceptance of liberty and justice for all. On the other side, some people with badges feel it gives them a right to do as they wish with little or no repercussions, and that is a big problem

Do I think there are bad cops out there? Absolutely. Do I think racism still exists? Yep! However, I don't think it's just a white issue like the media wants to portrait it as. ALL ethnicities have racism embedded in to them. In my mexican culture there are hispanic groups that shun and look down on other hispanics depending upon where they are from in the latin countries. It's not whites, blacks, hispanics, puerto ricans....it's a hate issue. As long as hate exists, racism will exist.

Good morning Karen,

Change is a slow process.thanks for sharing this video and kudos to your son's mother in law for taking action and trying to make a difference. It is an emotional situation in Fergson and I hope and pray they can over come this and move to a new "normal."

I agree with Nicole Doty, racism is not a white issue. Vandalism, hate, racism, crimes do not have a color.
