When Do You Decorate for Christmas?

When Do You Decorate for Christmas? When Do You Decorate for Christmas?

As I started to get the itch to get my Christmas trees (yes I said treeS,) I wondered when other folks start decorating for the Christmas holidays.

When I was a kid, we waited until December 16th to put up the tree.  Why that date?  It was Dad's birthday.  And I guess my Dad really liked putting up the tree.  As an adult it strikes me as a cruel joke to make Dad untangle tree lights and string them on the tree.  Then again, my father never knew the convenience of prelit fake trees.

In my house, I like the Christmas trees up as soon as reasonable.  For me, that's putting them up the week of Thanksgiving.  Makes the house look great when the guests arrive for dinner.  In fact, before Thanksgiving, they go up without ornaments.  Just the trees and the lights.  Ornaments after Thanksgiving.

And when it comes to taking it down, on or shortly after New Year's Day.

Would love to hear your traditions.

Sybil:  Thats what I used to do.  I just get to the point where I want the extra light in the house this time of year. Once the tree is down, the house feels so depressing.

We don't have an actual set date, but, it seems to usually happen a week before Christmas.  But, I have to admit, I don't always like to take the decorations down, it looks so naked!

I had every intention of starting this weekend, but got waylaid.  Will probably start putting some things up tomorrow..the tree goes up when my husband has a chance to drag it down from the attic.  Usually we decorate Thanksgiving weekend, but it's late this year!

We take everything down after the end of the 12 Days of Christmas, which ends Jan 5 UNLESS there is a chance of snow, then I may stretch it out!  LOL

We decorate the entire house, interior and exterior Friday and Saturday following Thanksgiving. but often we don't finish until Sunday afternoon.  A tree in our formal living room stays up all year long, it's called "the holiday tree" adorned with seasonal decorations, currently leaves, baby corn husks and wheat tied with rafia.  The tree doesn't come down until the day after the Greek Orthodox Christmas (this year January 7).  I like your idea of putting up the tree before Thanksgiving with just the lights.

We were so poor when I was growing up that my dad stopped at the Christmas tree stands while coming home drunk on Christmas Eve and put up the tree while we slept. I'm amazed the ornaments were put on right side up. My mother probably did that.

Hi Chris,  We always tried not to mix Thanksgiving with Christmas, so we wait until after Thanksgiving is over before taking down those decorations and putting up the Christmas ones.

When my kids were little we did it the day AFTER Thanksgiving because we always went to grandma's for Thanksgiving. Now, that we are in Tennessee and we don't see family, we decorate the day of Thanksgiving. We start right after Tom makes a wonderful crepe breakfast.

Chris Ann, I think most families wait until the day after Thanksgiving, but am seeing a few trees up now.

A bit late, but wanted to come by and congratulate you on the 2M milestone!  Congratulations!

Catherine:  My thoughts too about taking them down.

Winston: I do some pretty cool decprating for Halloween, so I at least have to wait until those are down.

Susan:  I didn't even know when the twelve days of Christmas ended.  Learned something new there.

Bette:  Cool idea to decorate it year round with seasonal stuff.

Elizabeth:  At least you had a tree and a woman's touch on the tree.

Ginny:  We are not minminalists, I can tell you that.  At least when it comes to Christmas.

Larry:  Mixing holidays, at least those two, doesn't seem to bother me.

Tammie:  Is the crepe breakfast Thanksgiving morning, or the next morning?

Joan:  I'm just glad you stopped by, as always.

We don't have a specific date to put our tree up. The tradition I have is that my family and their boyfriends or spouses help. The argue that they don't want to yet they come each year and help.

We put our tree up last Friday. I want to put a small one in the bathroom. My father in law use to put one in each room of his home. He has gone to heaven but I wish we could do that to. Christmas was his favorite tie of year.

It's a live tree for me... I never ever want an artificial pre-lit tree.  So we put it up around the 12th or so of December and I take it down on New Year's eve.

Tammy:  That makes sense for a live tree.  We once had a live tree swell so bad that it fell down during the night and stained our brand new carpet.  So we do artifical and I love the Mistletoe candle by Yankee Candles for the smell.
