Got Your Snow Shovel Ready? 3 Winter Prep Tips

Hey folks, it's that time of year again! You're watching the drenching rains and wondering "what if this was a snowstorm?" Well, depending on what source you read, 1 inch of rain would produce up to 10 inches of snow! So, as the kids are stomping through the puddles this week, why not do some winter planning? Here are 3 tips to get ready for the snowpocalypse before it arrives!
1) Upgrade or acquire good snow moving equipement! I'll bet, like me, you're the guy who is fighting for the last, cheap snow shovel at the hardware store first day it snows every year! Inevitably, that cheap shovel is broken by the end of the winter and you'll have to go through the entire process again next year. Stores are beginning to stock shovels now, so go get one before you need it. You'll have a better selection and be ready when the big one hits!
When buying, think of your own safety. In 2011, the American Journal of Emergency Medicine published a 17 year study that showed on average, there are 11,500 snow shoveling related injuries in the U.S. each year. 34% of those injuries were to the lower back. Consider a different style of shovel this year like THIS ONE or depending on how much snow you'll have, maybe even a snowblower?
2) Educate yourself on Ice-Dams. If your area typically has heavy snowfall, ice dams are a significant problem that can cause severe damage to your roof and other areas of your home. Basically, when the lowest layer of snow melts, runs down your roof, then re-freezes when it hits a cold gutter, then it blocks additional water from draining. This water backs up underneath your shingles and potentially leaking into your home. You can learn more about ice-dams HERE.
3) Sort through your winter clothing before you need it! There are a lot of reasons for this. First off, if you have kids, much of it won't fit this year. By figuring this out now, you can donate the items you can't use to local charities that are also preparing for winter. Plus, just like the snow shovels, you'll have a better selection of items now than when the first snow storm hits. A little extra time will let you wisely watch for sale items instead of paying full price out of an immediate necessity.
