What's the Neighborhood Like?
The homes you would expect to find for sale in the North City Neighborhood of Shoreline, Washington are generally going to range between 1,000 and 3,000 square feet. Most of the homes were originally built in the 1940s through the 70s.
More recently, builders have been replacing older, smaller homes with modern, more spacious homes, with small pockets of tasteful new construction in the neighborhood. Many other homes have had updates and it's not uncommon to find homes that have new second stories, adding to the square footage of some of the more traditional homes. There are also new, modern condo buildings in the neighborhood.
The smallest homes in North City start with 2 bedrooms while the larger floor plans have a 4 or more bedrooms in the layout. Most of the lots range in size from 6,000 square feet to over 10,000 square feet, so there is plenty of room for people to get out and enjoy the mild Pacific Northwest weather. Major Shopping Opportunities in or near the North City Neighborhood:
- Safeway - right at the intersection of 15th Ave and 175th in North City. Includes gas.
- Ballinger Village - immediately north of North City Neighborhood in Shoreline. High quality daily shopping at the family owned and operated Thriftway, along with Rite Aid, Starbucks, and a number of other stores.
- Aurora Village - just a mile west of North City at 205th and Aurora. This major shopping center features Costco (including gas), Home Depot, Petco, Fedex, Office Max, and many others.
- Lake Forest Park Town Center - just about a mile from North City in Lake Forest Park, this local community hub includes Third Place Books, along with the popular gathering place, Third Place Commons, with it's spacious wooden tables for meeting with others - whether for social, community or business purposes. A full calendar of events is hosted at the commons as well - at the tables or on the stage - and it provides a diverse palate food court as well. Lake Forest Park Town center is also home to Abertsons, Rite Aid, and a variety of local and chain stores.
- Fred Meyer - less than a mile west on 185th, your one stop shopping center.
- Sky Nursery - on Aurora Avenue, is a huge and well-stocked gardening resource
- Central Market - straight west from North City on 155th, along with many other shops in the same center
- Trader Joe's is coming to Shoreline! They will be moving into the old Top Foods store on 175th and Aurora - very close to North City - and opening up in 2015. This will be a huge TJ store with over 10,000 square feet.
- Nearby banks include: Chase, KeyBank, Bank of America, Sound Credit Union, Boeing Credit Union, Wells Fargo, US Bank, Sterling Bank, Whidbey Island Bank, and Washington Federal.
Parks and Recreation Facilities in the North City Neighborhood:
- Hamlin Park - a large 80 acre park which is a highlight of the North City Neighborhood. The oldest park in the city (acquired between 1939 and 1950), it includes 60 acres of forest with trails, as well as ball fields, historical artifacts, art, a playground, and even an orienteering course.
Parks and Recreation Facilities within 2 miles of the North City Neighborhood:
- Dale Turner YMCA - this state-of-the-art facility (new in 2008) includes a large gym, pool, expansive weight room, climbing tower and endless group fitness classes and youth programs. Best of all, it's only about a mile and a half from North City on Aurora Avenue.
- Spartan Gym - a community gym and weight room facility. Also hosts many Shoreline Parks and Recreation classes for children and adults.
- Shoreline Pool - a public pool that offers a robust schedule of recreation swims, swimming lessons, and a variety of water exercise classes
- Shoreline Park - just north of Shoreline Center with numerous ball fields, tennis courts, and some forest with trails
- Shoreline Stadium - owned by the school district and located at Shoreline Center, it hosts football games and other sports events.
- Ballinger Park - this 42-acre Mountlake Terrace open-space park is recently opened in 2013 - converted from a 9-hole public golf course at the north end of Lake Ballinger. Future park development is still in the planning.
- Lake Ballinger Dock and Boat Launch - at the south end of Ballinger Park, on the eastern shore of the lake, provides boating and year-round fishing access. The lake is 103 acres of open fresh water, including 3-acre Edmount Island.
- Nile Shriners Golf Center - a full-service public 18-hole golf course laying along the eastern shore of Lake Ballinger.
- Cromwell Park - completely restored, re-landscaped and rebuilt in 2010 by the City of Shoreline.
- Ronald Bog Park - with a tree arboretum and pond filled with wildlife.
Community Resources and Facilities in or near the North City Neighborhood:
- Shoreline Library - part of the King County Library System, which collectively offers over 4 million book titles
- North City Learning Center - at the former North City Elementary School (where my son attended 5th and 6th grade). It houses the Shoreline School District Home Education Exchange, the North City Cooperative Preschool, and a Wonderland Developmental Center site.
- Shoreine Civic Center/City Hall - Built to LEED Gold standards in 2008-09, this new, state-of-the-art facility not only efficiently houses the City Council, offices and neighborhood outreach programs, it also provides a central location for community member gatherings, meetings and events.
- Shoreline Center - the former Shoreline High School, and also once housing part of the city government, this large facility now plays host to countless events, classes, meetings, games (in the stadium or the gym) and performances (in the large performing arts hall or other rooms).
- Northwest Hospital is just 4 miles south of the neighborhood (my favorite emergency room), with many other medical, dental and vision clinics nearby.

Annual Special Events in Shoreline:
- Celebrate Shoreline - the city's annual birthday celebration (Shoreline incorporated as its own city in 1995), with music, family entertainment, arts, food, car show and beer garden.
- Shoreline Arts Festival - a summer celebration of the arts - visual, musical and performing, with local artisans, opportunities to participate for all ages, entertainment, and food.
- Northwest Solar Fest - an exhibition of renewable energy technologies hosted annually at Shoreline Community College, which provides a cutting-edge Clean Energy Technology Associate in Applied Arts and Sciences degree
- National Night Out Against Crime - Every year on the first Tuesday evening of August, in neighborhoods all over the country, families take to the streets with their barbecues. The City of Shoreline is very supportive of these festivities - which brings neighbors together to become aquainted and to collaborate on local safety.

What Schools will the Kids Attend?
The award-winning Shoreline School District is one of the top reasons families move to Shoreline (US News Best High Schools, Washington Achievement Award). Shoreline School District's Great Schools rating is 8 out of 10. Compare with 6 out of 10 for both Seattle Schools to the south, and Edmonds District to the north. Depending on where you live in the North City Neighborhood of Shoreline, WA, Elementary students could attend Ridgecrest Elementary School, Brookeside Elementary School, or Briarcrest Elementary School. Public middle schoolers go to Kellogg Middle School, and the oldest students attend the brand-new rebuilt Shorecrest High School, with it's top-notch science, math, and performing arts programs.
Private school options in and close to the North City Neighborhood in Shoreline Washington include Shoreline Christian School (k-12), Lakeside School (middle and high school), Kings School (K-12), St Luke School (P-8), The Evergreen School for gifted students (P-8), and Pacific Learning Center NW (students with disabilities).
For Higher Education, Shoreline has its own innovative Shoreline Community College. Edmonds Community College is 5 miles north. The University of Washington main Seattle campus is 8 miles south. Both I and my son are UW alumni.
