Who Says Getting a Loan and Buying a New Home is Easy?
Thoughts from a New Homeowner
I doubt that most people getting a mortgage and buying a new home these days would say it’s easy.
Oh, it can go very well with the right people to help you from start to finish – title, escrow, lender, buyer’s agent – but it is not, by a long-shot, stress free.
Don’t forget the stress of getting your home (yes, it’s filled with all kinds of stuff that you need to get rid of, isn’t it?) packed up and moving into a new home where everything is different. Where do you put it all??
While you likely love having a new home, whether it’s the first or one of a long list, eyeing your home filled with boxes, bare walls, and furniture scattered about is more than a bit daunting.
Unless you buy a carbon copy of your old house, your stuff will all need to find new homes (and that can take weeks!!), and the traffic patterns will be new and take time to acclimate to.
You know…now which cupboard did I put those coffee mugs in (remember, you use to be able to find them without thinking in your early morning haze)? Which drawer holds the silver ware? I know I saw those favorite pots and pans, but where? The list goes on.
Even finding your way to the bathroom in the middle of the night in the dark feels different. And the light switches have all moved.
Unless you have ice water in your veins, all of this is stressful, with a bunch of anxiety thrown in here and there. I just did it again, for the 10th time, so I know what it’s like.
We are still getting used to where thing are in our home in Carlsbad, or in many cases have forgotten where we put them – I need signage! The 2-car garage still has no room for even 1 car, art work is still on the floor, boxes are piled in a few corners, and 2 weeks later we still, a little, feel like visitors in our new home. We love it, and it’s getting more comfortable, but it’s still new!!
But the joys of homeownership far outweigh all the anxiety, the frustrations, the problems to be solved, the waiting, the fatigue and stress of moving to a new place. It’s unsettling for a while but you’ll get through it.
Preparing for what lies ahead (that’s why you work with a knowledgeable REALTOR!), making lists, following up, asking questions, and recognizing this will be a full time job in addition to whatever else you are doing helps a ton.
