It's that time of year again. Time to gather with our families and give thanks for all we have. There are many traditions surrounding Thanksgiving, not the least of which is the turkey.
In Canton MA, and in fact in most Massachusetts cities and towns, Thanksgiving means high school football. I'm not sure about other parts of the country but in Massachusetts, Thanksgiving is the day when local high school football teams play their rivals.
For Canton, that means the annual Canton vs. Stoughton Thanksgiving Day game. The 2014 meeting represents the 89th annual game, which started in 1926. Stoughton is in the overall lead, having won 44 games to Canton's 40 losses, with four ties. Canton's most recent win came in the 2012 upset over Stoughton.
This year the game will be played at Stoughton High School at 10 am. Here's hoping the Bulldogs come back with a win tomorrow morning!
Not only do current students turn out for the game, but many graduates - both recent & not so recent - returning home attend the game and reunite with old friends and former classmates. Some visit local establishments for bagels and beer after the game before they head off to family dinners.
Thanksgiving Day is not the only day for big football games and rivalries. On the day prior to Thanksgiving, the Canton High senior girls take on the Stoughton High senior girls for the annual Powderpuff Game. This year was no exception as the Canton High girls took the field to take on the Stoughton girls. Last year bad weather caused the cancellation of the Powderpuff Game. I did not hear of any cancellations so I think they played in the rain and snow today. Bad weather won't stop our girls!
