Even today, as empty nesters, our special love of Christmas is still enhanced with the tradition of an early start with the season of Advent. My husband and I share stories of years past as we remove boxes from storage, and observe each vintage ornament and nativity set.
When I was child, it seems as if my parents were always in a rush to get Christmas over with. The tree (a real tree) went up two days before Christmas morning with Mom decorating it like a department store display tree. Dad would let me help him place the handmade wooden Santa, reindeer and sleigh in the front yard. Then, everything was always torn down New Year’s Eve Day.
In our household, my husband and I have always decorated for Christmas a day or two after Thanksgiving, with the nativity sets going up before anything else, since we want the first focus on Christmas to be about the season of Advent. The decorations stay up until the day after the Greek Orthodox Christmas, except for the “seasonal tree.” The seasonal tree located in the living room, remains in place all year long, and is decorated according to the season.
Christmas is my absolute favorite holiday/time of year and I love hearing about decorating traditions of others. Do you have any special decorating traditions?
