I just found a pretty decent article on steps to take as much as a year before becoming a homeowner. I think it's a fair primer on home-buying readiness.
Of course, the overwhelming message of the article is that you need to be thinking loan first, house second. I keep trying to emphasize to my clients that they need to get themselves pre-approved by a lender so that they know how much house they can afford, and that they'll be ready to buy a good deal when we find it.
