Never say never, except when it comes to...

Never say never, except when it come to a few things about your real estate career.  Never is a long time and life takes many twists and turns as we hurtle headlong toward never.

Real estate careers are frought with changes.DRA Homes Cobb Real Estate

You change brokerages.

You change specialties.

You change your profile pictures. (Please change your profile picture at least once a decade!)

You change your hair.

NEVER, EVER, NO MATTER WHAT...CHANGE YOUR PHONE NUMBER.

NEVER, EVER, NO MATTER WHAT...CHANGE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS.

(AR disclaimer: no need to jump on my head to tell me that you have to change your phone number if you move across country or at least area codes)

No matter how many times you change anything else, your phone number and email address need to follow you EVERYWHERE.

Unless, of course, you enter witness protection, then all bets are off!

The best piece of advice I ever received, about 4 years too late...DO NOT USE YOUR BROKERAGE EMAIL ADDRESS as the primary contact with your clients.

I always recommend using a stand alone email service like gmail, yahoo, or any other of your choosing. Or, you can use an email associated with a website domain name that YOU OWN.

Use caution with your domain name emails, you will need to maintain those domains in good standing to keep your email active in perpetuity.

Changing your phone number will be just as damaging to your business as changing your email.

People will not go online and google you in search of new contact information.

They will just assume that you are no longer in the real estate business and move on in search of a new real estate professional.

Consistency is key in everything that you will do in real estate.

Keeping your contact information consistent over time is no exception!

In general, I agree, and I use my att.net email address (my Keller Williams email address feeds directly to it.)   I would like to tie it to my website eventually.  For now my biggest issue is that we can't easily change our ISP because I would have to change too much.

All great points.  Thank you for that reminder.  A number of years ago, I had my email address tied to my brokerage.  Ooops, left and so did all of my emails and contacts!  Lesson learned!

Karen, it very annoying and too much to expect that people will start searching to find you.  We save contact emails in our address books and when the email bounces back we just move on to the next guy.

Marte Cliff we have to protect ourselves and our business against trials that can and do befall businesses everyday.

Laura Moore it's all too common for agents to change brokerages and it's far better to have your own site, email and branding image to carry whereever you go.

Kimo Jarrett no, I don't think anyone judges your email address.  Unless of course it's sweetfeet@hotmail.com.  Then I'm judging!

Wanda Kubat-Nerdin anything can happen, it's always smart to control as much as you can when it comes to your own intellectual property and prospecting records.

Kat Palmiotti as soon as you can filter things away from the brokerage email, the better.  Should you ever decide to change, it will make things much easier on you.

Ann Wilkins you have to do what makes you feel comfortable and as long as you are in control of your files, you've protected yourself in that way.

Cathy Perry it can all get very complicated, I don't mind having my email separated from my website.  I'm not a fan of having all my eggs in one basket.

Christi Farrington that is EXACTLY what I did as a new agent.  Four years at one brokerage and then left with practically nothing.  Never again.

Some timely advice...although I prefer using my brokerage email consistantly.

Jenna - you are absolutely correct.  Never change email or phone.  And you email should be your website domain not Google gmail.

Dear Jenna,

Good advice. About the picture too. I know a couple of people, who have not changed theirs in more than 3 decades. That starts to be a little scary, when they meet clients & are mistaken for their own parents.

Youi got that right, Jenna. I've had the same email address since emails became a standard of communication in real estate, as well as the same phone number. I've moved from Prudential to Helen Adams to RE/MAX to Keller Williams and back to RE/MAX without missing a beat because clients could always find me. Most never even realized I moved from RE/MAX to KW and back to RE/MAX! I tell new agents all the time not to use their corporate email addresses and phone numbers. (Some listen, some don't.)

Securing your own domain and a cell phone number that will never change is critical.  I recently attempted to contact a loan officer.  I knew that this individual had changed companies and I knew the name of the company.  When I did a quick search, old contact info came up. The loan officer had forgotten to update online info.  It is beginning to be an issue that outdated online info never goes away and it's confusing to people.  All the more reason to have a permanent domain, email address and phone number.  Another fabulous topic and post by Jenna Dixon

Mary Hutchison, SRES, ABR as long as you are confident in what you are doing, I can't argue with what works for you.  Success!

Nina Hollander you paint the picture perfectly.  Clients don't care what banner you work under, they just want to be able to find YOU!

Liane Thomas - Corona & Riverside Real Estate Yes!  You never know what could happen and reinventing the wheel is time consuming.

Sharon Parisi we are everywhere online now, tracking down all that information and updating it can take months (if you can even remember it all) better to stay consistent with critical information so as not to do too much damage.

Jenna, we are in agreement that our clients care about us and not our companies... but that being said, I also know that if you have the name of a first class company (whether local, regional, or national) behind you and you know how to "sell" the advantages of your affiliation with that company, people listen.

The very first thing a new agent should do is get their own domain name and e-mail address.

I have to agree with you on not changing your phone number or e-mail address.  However, I did have to change my e-mail address, but changed it about 3 months after I started in real estate.  The reason is, it was confusing and it was a comcast e-mail.  It was wcscottiii@comc.....!  My problem was people were confusing the "iii" with "111" and "lll" and if I ever left comcast, I might lose the e-mail address.  So, I quickly switched to wscott3721@gmail.com and got all my business cards and connections updated on the change.  I'm glad I thought about it before it was too late.

Thanks to some research as I was getting my licence, I was smart. I early on adopted that the one person I would always brand would be ME.  A phone number and email to take with me anywhere I went.  I have always leveraged my broker's good name but make no doubt..if it is next week, next year or 10 years from now, I will always be me and me and my things go with me.   :-)
