Hang Your Holiday Lights like a Pro

One of the things that we look forward to in the holiday season is the beauty of homeowner’s holiday lights as you drive through the streets and subdivisions of Barrie and the surrounding areas! They add that little extra bit of sparkle that really makes the holidays feel magical!

Hanging your holiday lights however, is usually less than magical! But with these tips you’ll be hanging your Christmas lights like a pro in no time:

Test Your Lights

There’s nothing worse than getting your lights hug up just to find out that they aren’t working! You should also complete a visual inspection to make sure that there are no broken or missing bulbs or worn or defective wiring. Replace any questionable strands to prevent a fire hazard.

Map & Measure

Map out where you want your lights to go, taking measurements along the way to make sure that you have enough working lights for the job! Be sure to take into the account eaves, windows, doors etc.

Start With a Power Source

Start your plan by running extension cords from a working 120 volt electrical outlet. To save you time and energy costs, you’ll likely want to run your lights from a switch operated outlet, or plug your lights into an outdoor approved timer.

Set up a Ladder – Safely!

It’s best to have a partner when using a ladder to help make sure the ladder is secure and you are safe. Place the ladder firmly on flat ground, extending it well above the eaves and lean it at an angle that is safe (not too steep or flat). Have your partner hold on to the bottom of the ladder from the ground to add extra stability. Try not to lean the ladder against the gutter, if you need to do this reinforce the gutter with a short piece of 2x4 to avoid doing any damage.

String the Lights

To avoid any damage to your home, its best to attach your lights to gutter or shingles with an all purpose light clip. You can hang your lights facing up or down, just make sure that you clip all of the lights in the same direction! There are also deck clips for attaching lights to your deck or railing.

Enjoy!

Now it’s time to flip the switch (or start the timer), and stand back to enjoy all of your hard work. Grab a hot chocolate and a Christmas cookie and enjoy the view – you’ve earned it!

We hope that this information will help you to hang your holiday lights with ease!

Sincerely,

Lights require so much time to put up each year.  We settled on five wreaths.
