Myakka is home to the Crowley Museum and Nature Center which features Life in Old Florida! You can learn about the way of life on a farm in John Crowley's days, an original pioneer farmer, and actually take classes in survival skills, self-sustainability, plant growing, livestock rearing and breeding, traditional crafting and more. The Crowley is home to a herd of certified "Cracker" Cows and Ponies, pigs, chickens and a mule; and also has an organic vineyard, orchard and kitchen garden.
The Myakka City Lemur Reserve is 100 acres in the far eastern zone of Manatee County surrounded by agriculture only. The Lemurs live in enclosures as natural as possible to ensure their pristine, healthy existence and so that behavioral science is maximized. There are 40 Lemurs in residence currently. The grounds include housing for the caretaker and other staff and for visiting professors including Duke University Research Partners!
Another Claim to Fame is the Legend of the Myakka "Skunk Ape", featured whenever questions arise about mysterious beings living among us. Some have begun to compare our area Mystery Man to Sumatran Orangutans! There certainly are similarities in facial features. We'll never know for certain unless we find one.......
