Important Info & Tips on Cybercrime across the World by Robert Swetz VB

CYBERCRIME

What is it? Cybercrime refers to crime conducted online. It includes tax and welfare fraud, credit card fraud, and the non-delivery of purchases. It also includes scams, such as fraudulent investments and online auctions.

How does it effect people? Cybercrime costs the victims-and society as a whole-billions of dollars. Consider an example: Sandra received a email that she assumed was from her bank asking her to update her online banking details. Minutes after sending her personal particulars, she was alarmed to see that $4,000 dollars had been transferred from her account into a foreign bank. Sandra quickly discovered that she had been scammed.

What can you do?

BE WARY: Do not be fooled by professional looking websites, and keep in mind that legitimate financial institutes will not ask you to email highly confidential information. Before buying or investing online, ascertain the company's reputation. "Anyone inexperienced puts faith in every word, but the shrewd one considers their steps." And be cautious dealing with companies located in foreign lands. If problems arise, it can be harder to resolve them.

ANALYZE A COMPANY AND ITS POLICIES: Ask yourself ... What is the company's physical address? Is the phone number correct? Will my purchase involves hidden costs? When will my order be delivered? Can it be returned or refunded?

BE SUSPICIOUS IF A OFFER LOOKS TO GOOD TO BE TRUE: The greedy and those who want something for nothing are prime targets for online thieves. The bait may include big money for minimal work, a loan or credit card even though you may have poor credit rating, or large returns on "low-risk" investments. "Take your time in evaluating the legitimacy of any investment offer," says the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC). "The higher the promised returned, the higher the risk,. Don't let a promoter pressure you into committing to an investment before you are certain it's legitimate."

It's a shame really. I've had this banking confirmation email numerous times and I always delete. My elderly father was smart enough to print out the email and head to the bank in person. It saved him money and frustrations.  Happy Holidays VB. D

It's a real threat.  We have had our credit card replaced twice this year because the credit card company caught fraudulent charges on it.  Lucky for us they watch so well and notified us.

Good evening VB.  I am always wary when it comes to suspicious emails. There are a lot of folks out there waiting to take $$ from unsuspecting folks.

VB, Cyber crime is a huge business and one we all have to be leery of and take precautions. Not long ago the Russian mob stole billions of passwords and logins from sites all across the globe. Thanks for telling everyone to be careful.

Hi VB, excellent post and important information...thank you.  I just purchased a new secure wallet for my credit cards. It has a shield that protects your cards against anyone trying to read your cards at malls,  when traveling, etc.
