 Bengal Tiger Dies

Bengal Tiger, Abq Zoo

Lucy the beautiful and kind 16 year old Bengal Tiger passed away Wednesday December 3,2014.  Lucy and her male partner Scout lived most of their lives together at the ABQ Zoo. They were only a few months old when they came to the Albuquerque Zoo.

The ABQ staff noticed Lucy bleeding from her mammary glands and the medical team took action immediately.  Lucy was sedated by BioPark Vets and an Xray showed a large mass around her lungs.  Lucy did not recover from the anesthesia sadly the decision was made to euthanize her.

The last time Debbie and I personally saw Lucy she was totally ignoring us as we snapped pictures of her. She was playfully pawing at a ball in the water splashing Scout as he looked on at her antics.

Scout is now bewildered by the absence of his life long mate.  He has been checking their living quarters repeatedly looking to find Lucy.

Fact is Bengal Tigers are endangered in the wild and only live an average of 8-10 years.  Bengal Tigers often live 15-20 years in well maintained zoos.  Lucy lived a long and good life at the ABQ Zoo and will be greatly missed by all.  Sadly and without doubt Scout will miss her most of all.

John: How sad and I wonder how Scout will hold up losing his life-long mate. He is rather old too so I wonder how much longer he has.

This is truly a great loss to the animal kingdom and especially to Scout. I wonder how it will effect him without her. I hope the zoo pays special attention to his needs during his time of mourning because I'm sure he'll be going through it too.

Folks, This is sad news and I am sure Ccout will never be the same without his mate. Bengal Tigers are very much endangered as you said in your post and in many cases are slaughter in the wild. Lucy was a beautiful Tiger.

How sad for the zoo and for Scout.  I hope the zoo care taker will decide to put her body in the cage so Scout knows why Lucy is no longer there with him.  He must be lonely now.

Wow this whole story is sad with exception to them getting a longer life but you have to wonder if you could live double the life but were kept locked up what would you choose?

I personally choose freedom the whole zoo thing saddens me for the animals

Zoos can be safe places for endangered animals and Lucy certainly got the care and attention she deserved and led a long life.

It's truly a shame that such a majestic animal was lost but it seemed like she had a long, healthy and happy life at ABQ zoo.

Hi John, Sorry to hear the loss of such a beautiful animal.  A long life indeed! So hard for Scout... Did they ever have off spring to ensure the continuation of their line?
