Leisure World Maryland Recycles & Safely Disposes for Green Community

 Recycle symbol

Leisure World continues to be a #1 living choice for seniors in Montgomery County, Maryland—but the gated community knows it has to maintain in order to stay at the top. The beautiful landscape surrounding all residences and facilities, the emerald 18-hole golf course stretching for yards and yards . . . these aren’t just green aesthetically. Every day Leisure World staff and affiliated contractors work diligently to maintain a sustainable, eco-friendly, truly green campus for the overall health and happiness of the community’s 8,000+ residents.

But the dedication doesn’t stop there. Leisure World makes sure to openly communicate the importance of environmental friendliness to residents, encouraging them to take up green habits as well. Check out Leisure World’s extensive recycling and disposal policy below—originally presented by the Director of Sanitation.

Materials to always recycle:

  • Newspapers, junk mail, and inserts (paper)
  • Magazines
  • Aluminum, bi-metal, and aluminum foil products
  • Glass bottles and jars that are green, amber, or transparent
  • Yard trimmings—grass, leaves, brush, and Christmas trees

Leisure World strictly requires that residents use string to tie up their newspapers/magazines in bundles or simply place them in a paper (this is important!) bag. Demonstrating awareness of and appreciation for Montgomery County as a whole, the community reminds residents that plastic bags should never be placed with recyclables.

Next, the Director of Sanitation meticulously distinguishes between recyclable and non-recyclable plastic materials.

Recyclable plastic: Recycle bottles, containers, lids, jars, pails, buckets, food-grade tubs, platter trays…

Bottles, jars, and containers that once contained food, drink, and safe household products are recyclable. This includes pet-litter containers, flower pots, painting buckets (but only up to 5 gallons!), and laundry detergent tubs. Prescription bottles should also be recycled.

NON-recyclable plastic: Containers that previously held automotive or gardening products (chemicals and pesticides that are hazardous to the environment) are not accepted by recycling services. Additionally, plastic wrap, plastic bags, Styrofoam/polystyrene items (cups, trays, and packaging), microwavable trays, toys, inflatable “kiddie pools,” and flower tray packs are not recyclable materials.

The final section of Leisure World’s informative document instructs residents on how to properly and safely dispose of common but more difficult household items.

Smoke alarms: Dispose in regular house trash (radioactive material is too weak to cause any harm) or, if applicable, send back to product’s manufacturer.

Fluorescent light bulbs and tubes: Residents are recommended to bring these to the Leisure World Physical Properties Department for safe recycling due to the thin layer of mercury contained inside. However, they are permitted to be disposed in the trash.

Batteries: The dry cell and alkaline batteries found in toys, flashlights, and appliances are safe to dispose in the house trash.

Button batteries, nickel-cadmium rechargeable batteries, uninterruptible power supplies, and lead acid car batteries contain more valuable metals, so residents should seek advice and assistance from the Physical Properties Department.

Fire Extinguishers—aerosol: Aerosol fire extinguishers may be disposed in the regular trash.

Fire Extinguishers—cylinder: Residents with cylinder-type extinguishers should take theirs outdoors and empty its contents in a moistened paper grocery bag; the bag can be put in the trash afterwards. Residents should then remove the top valve and place both valve and cylinder into the trash.

Metal parts from the extinguisher are NOT recyclable; residents are advised to drop them off once each year at the hazardous materials station set up in Clubhouse II.

Hardback books: The cover must be stripped from the rest of the book, and then both cover and bound pages should be bundled separately like newspapers and magazines.

Leisure World has been recognized for its commitment to recycling over the years; in fact, according to the Director of Sanitation, it is “one of the leaders in recycling in the State.” In the past, the community gathered more than two million pounds of scrap metal, cardboard, newspaper, and other materials. Communication of environmental conservation practices is the key to spreading and maintaining awareness—and, naturally, the effects of Leisure World’s collaborative and proactive efforts are enjoyed instantly by everyone who visits, works, and lives there.
