Things You Need to Know About Mold

Where there is moisture you will often find mold, and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are numerous health effects and concerns as a result of exposure to mold. Not everyone that comes in contact with this fungi will get sick, but why take the chance.

By taking some common sense precautions to reduce moisture and condensation, lower humidity, and ensure sunlight is present you can significantly lower the risk that your home and family will be affected. Prevention is better than the cure!

The Infographic guide below provides some background information about mold, what is important to know as homeowners or home buyers, the types of damage that mold can cause, and ways to prevent, reduce, test for, and get rid of this household pest! When you know what it is and how you can deal with it, the situation becomes a much easier one to understand and take action on.

Nice info-graphic on an issue that can be so deadly for many.  I had a client last year that almost died from the toxic mold in her condo

Nice quick infographic to go over the basic ins and outs of mold.  Mold is everywhere unfortunately and some are much more susceptible than others.

Wow, her condo must have been infested, Ed.

Debbie: Hopefully you gave her some education. ;-)

So very true, Kevin. We can take precautions to do our best to minimize it is all.

Anita, that is one incredible infographic! Mold is a serious issue and shouldn't be ignored. Thanks for the great information--especially regarding bleach vs. water/vinegar!

Tom: Using bleach is often what folks think of first...there are better options.

So glad you enjoyed it, Dagny. Thanks.

Thanks Anita, Bleach is the old wives tale on how to eliminate mold. If mold is on wood or porous surfaces, bleach is useless. Changes the color and looks pretty but the mold is still there. Testing is useful when the client needs to know what may be making them sick. Is it mold or is it something else. It helps them determine the next course of action. I never tell them my report is a medical report. That's for their doctor.

Great info! and... such an easy solution with fairly innocuous substances such as vinegar and water. Prevention is best.

Scott: You are correct. People are fooled because the color changes but the mold is definitely still present.

I agree, Olga. If it can be prevented, that is the course everyone should be taking.

Even if we can't get sick immediately by touching them, nobody wants a moldy home. As usual, your infographics is excellent.

That is very true, Katerina. Everyone reacts differently to mold but there is no reason it should be present.

So many people overreact to mold. Mold usually indicates a moisture problem. There is usually a simple cure for mold. In VA, anyone can remediate mold. No license is required, but it's still a good idea to hire someone with experience if mold has become serious, such as in abandoned homes, foreclosures, etc that have been sitting for months with no power.

Jeff: Agreed, the solution is often simple. For those instances where it has gone beyond your abilities, it is time to call someone else in to handle it.
