15 Things To Do For Your Home In December

Christmas, holidays, home maintenance

Baby, it’s cold outside!  This month’s to-do list is geared towards staying comfortable and enjoying the holidays:

1.  Have snow shovels, warm work gloves and ice melt easily accessible.

2.  Make sure you are ready in case of a bad snowstorm, ice storm or other inclement weather – have some supplies ready in case you can’t get out to a store or have an extended power outage.  This includes candles and matches, flashlights and extra batteries, bottled water, food for you and your pets, and extra medications you take regularly.

3.  Keep your walkways cleared of snow and ice.  Check out this article for snow shoveling safety tips.

4.  Stock your car in case the worst happens and you get stranded somewhere:  one of those flashlights you shake to power up (the little ones with just one light bulb don’t put out a lot of light, but you can get better ones with three light bulbs); a cell phone charger, bottled water and packaged food, a first aid kit, extra gloves, a warm blanket, possibly a hand-cranked radio, and kitty litter to give you traction if you do get stuck.

5.  Change your furnace filter – this should be done monthly throughout the winter months.

6.  Use space heaters – if you’re cold, say sitting at your desk, or watching TV, using a space heater to warm the small area you are in makes more sense than turning up the thermostat and heating a large area.

7.  Check for drafts and plug them up.

8.  Give your wood furniture some attention this month.  Here is a great article on how to care for wood furniture.

9.  Don’t have a mud room?  Make a place by your door for the boots and coats by adding a small bench, some hooks, a tray for the boots, and a basket to corral the gloves, mittens and earmuffs.  Here are some low cost, but still-stylish ideas.

10. This is a great time to buy a new appliance – next year’s models are becoming available so you can find big discounts on the older stock.

11. Put up your holiday lights.

12. Set up a gift-wrapping station with everything you need at hand to quickly and easily wrap your gifts as you purchase them.

13. Making a decoration or ornament with the kids is always fun – here are some ideas!

14. Make sure you give your guest room some love if you are planning on visitors this month – try sleeping in it yourself for one night to see what you need to add for your guest’s comfort.

15. Don’t forget the pets!  Make sure your animals have plenty of ice-free water to drink and a way to get out of the elements and stay warm and dry.

Have a wonderful December, and stay comfie and safe!

Good afternoon Barb.  You've provided an excellent list of winter home tips.  Hard to believe we are in shorts and tee shirts today and Christmas is just around the corner.  I have done a couple things on your list for the weatherization of our home.
