You ladies in this business might be able to relate to this post today! I do a lot of commercial real estate especially on the land and development side. In my neck of the woods, this has been primarily the domain of our male counterparts!
I have been called "little lady", "sweet thang", "young lady" and many more! Now, the "young" one I kind of like now that I have reached the age of 55. However, these little names can sometimes be meant as put-downs. Now of course there are those "little old men" that use these terms as terms of endearment.
What I encountered the other day was absolutely not intended as a term of endearment rather a poised position of power and put down. This particular gentleman, and I use that term sparingly, kept referring to me in these types of terms in order to try and gain authority and domination of the transaction.
I knew the moment that I met him that he was "one of those" who enjoys trying to exert their power, knowledge and superiority in this business over women. Now you men reading this, please don't take offense as most of the men that I work with treat me with the utmost respect. In fact, the developer of whom I represent was so put off by how this man was treating me that he is refusing to do business with him.
So I wonder, what this man hopes to gain by treating women this way? Haven't we finally reached a point where men and women can work together even if it has previously been a business dominated by men? In his case, he is the one losing out.
So, this little lady has moved on and this little man will not be able to do "bidness" with the Developer! Time to grow up, respect all of whom you work with and stop looking for ways to belittle another person! Moving forward and onward!
