Well Little Lady, Let's Do Some Bidness!

Real Estate Broker/Owner with Beam & Branch Realty TREC #547752

You ladies in this business might be able to relate to this post today!  I do a lot of commercial real estate especially on the land and development side.  In my neck of the woods, this has been primarily the domain of our male counterparts!

I have been called "little lady", "sweet thang", "young lady" and many more!  Now, the "young" one I kind of like now that I have reached the age of 55.  However, these little names can sometimes be meant as put-downs.  Now of course there are those "little old men" that use these terms as terms of endearment.

What I encountered the other day was absolutely not intended as a term of endearment rather a poised position of power and put down.  This particular gentleman, and I use that term sparingly, kept referring to me in these types of terms in order to try and gain authority and domination of the transaction.

I knew the moment that I met him that he was "one of those" who enjoys trying to exert their power, knowledge and superiority in this business over women.  Now you men reading this, please don't take offense as most of the men that I work with treat me with the utmost respect.  In fact, the developer of whom I represent was so put off by how this man was treating me that he is refusing to do business with him.

So I wonder, what this man hopes to gain by treating women this way?  Haven't we finally reached a point where men and women can work together even if it has previously been a business dominated by men?  In his case, he is the one losing out.

So, this little lady has moved on and this little man will not be able to do "bidness" with the Developer!  Time to grow up, respect all of whom you work with and stop looking for ways to belittle another person!  Moving forward and onward!

I always treat women, as a whole, like I would treat my mother (God bless her soul) my wife or my daughter; with respect. No games or power grabs; just a level negotiating surface to conduct business Paula McDonald !!!

Paula- I'm from Houston, and you can tell the difference between a "little lady" and the other.  It's the new millennium so some of the good ole boys need to get with it.

Paula seems to me this particular man has some 'issues' and it doesn't show strength to put others down in order to attempt to make themselves feel better.. It shows weakness and inferiority.

Kathy Streib you are so right that you can tell the difference!  I can't imagine speaking to a man that way in our line of business.

Anna Banana Kruchten you bet he is a "little" man on the inside!  I love it that the Developer basically put him in his place from one man to another!

Paula McDonald ....I see it all the time ...These men will never change and they tend to treat their male counter-parts the same way! I've let the same type go many times ....I just won't deal with them .....Glad you and the developer you represent did the same thing!

Have a great night!

Paula, Some folks have not learned how to check their ego's at the door before attempting to do bidness. I applaud the developer for refusing to do bidness with the clown because of how he treated you.

Sometimes we simply have to take a deep breath and move on--no way are we going to change someone who is so foolish. I'm delighted by your client's stance.

Your tale reminds me of shopping for a car about 30 years ago; the salesman actually patted me on the head and called me the 'little woman.' (We did not buy a car from him )

Sweetie (I'm ducking now), I've run into a few of those along the way, and whether male to female, or in my case just listing agent to buyer's agent and I'm a guy, the attempt to control and exert power does nothing but irritate me.  I'm not much for playing games.  It's about my clients and I'll tolerate a lot of bull for the sake of keeping things calm and on track.  Bill

P.S., our previous preferred loan officer (a woman) used to call everyone honey or sweetie.  All well and good, but we had a couple of clients that it kind of chapped their hindquarters to be referred to that way.

Unfortunately Paula, there are men who will never get it - ever. We can probably make some stereotypes about them with the "how and why's" but let's not. They will continue their bad behaviors even if it costs them, stubborn and stupid.

In these times trying to obtain dominance over another regardless of which side you're on will kill a deal with everyone.  I demand respect and I also give the other side the same respect until they show me otherwise.

Hi Paula McDonald ,  I don't know why anyone would want to put you down.  There are those men in this society that just don't grow up.  We see that everyday with marriage abuse cases.  It's good that you can move on.  They are not worth the irritation.  It's their problem, not yours.  Have a wonderful Holiday Season!

What a piece of work.  Glad to hear the developer was not happy with the behavior. This type of rudeness is a poor way to run a business!

I started as a real estate agent in Beverly Hills and very soon 'honey, sweetie, darling, sweet heart'' ect. became my daily words. It's just a language here everyone using to everyone. I use it myself too. Yet, when I'm very upset,  it is not the right time 'honey-boney' me.

p.s. The commercial agents do speak down to woman more often .
