It was a beautiful sunny day on Wednesday, and I was able to get away early - so I decided to take Jade and Tundra to the Rockefeller Preserve in Sleepy Hollow, NY.
The Preserve is well known as an "important bird area" and for its working farm. Tundra, being brought home towards the end of July last summer as a small pup - was only introduced to the preserve towards the end of December. So this was one of the first time she encountered a brand new animal called the COW!
We were all walking along very happily when suddenly something caught Tundra's eye: a grazing herd of cattle....

You could literally see the little wheels turning in her head.
She was stiff and alert and at full attention!
"WOW! What's THAT?" You could see the look of both wonder and fear in her eyes. "These are either the BIGGEST DOGS I'VE EVER SEEN - or something ELSE altogether!"
Tundra decided not to take any chances - her hackles went up and she started "barking - as much as any husky can. (a hybrid woof/howl) Her body was stiff and her ears were straight up. Her whole body was at stiff attention while Jade just watched in amusement.
The cows were totally unimpressed by this brave display and they lounged lazily enjoying the cool blustery day and ignoring the silliness on display.

We continued on our way towards the lake and as we walked around the lake I noticed that the waterfoal had definitely returned to Swan Lake. I also spied a species of duck that I hadn't observed at the Preserve before. Although common to other locations in southern Westchester County, I haven't seen many bufflehead ducks on Swan Lake. Yet today there were quite a few mating pairs swimming together among the usual mallards and geese. I saw one taking off into flight from the water which is how they first came to my attention.
