Word of the day : Frivolous

By
Real Estate Agent with RLAH / @properties DC / MD / VA

While at Toastmasters this week, I had the priviledge of selecting the Word of the Day for the meeting.  I chose "Frivolous".

(adjective)
  • characterized by lack of seriousness or sense
    eg, "
    frivolous conduct"
  • of little or no weight, worth, or importance; not worthy of serious notice:
    eg, "a frivolous suggestion"

There are several other explanations, but this was the one which caught my attention.

In my view, life is short and there are so many many real fun and real frivolous things I want to do.  I truly want to do fun things, maybe even frivolous things.  I really want to get to yet one more Nationals baseball game.

Nationals Park

Good frivolous is going to a baseball game, especially if we win; or at least if it's a good tight game.

If I go with a vendor or a past or future client, then it's not even frivolous, right?!!!!

Frivolous is the buyer client who insists on settling on Monday the 31st, not Friday the 28th even though the short sale lender had insisted Friday the 28th. I get to "play" with this frivolous issue while the client is on vacation for 3+ weeks, returning home on the Thursday. I pounded my head for hours, every day. Finally got the lender & seller to agree to delay settlement until the 31st.  Friday morning, buyer calls and suggests "you're right, let's do it today so I have the weekend to get going and it'll be much easier to be out of my rental by Monday".  That was frivolous.

Frivolous is ..oh, dozens of recent inspection issues ...you know....those....

Frivolous is the appraiser who "decides" the home is over the lot line, and decides to ensure all parties in the contract are made aware of this info.  Of course, he's not a surveyor and he's ultimately wrong, but the hours of stress to my clients (and me) was a frivolous use of time.

Frivolous is obsession attention to details.  If you want lunch with me in 2 weeks, can we just agree that we'll do lunch, 1pm Friday the 19th. Details to be defined by mid morning that day.  If we have 6 emails to nail down the details 2 weeks befoe, I'm not having fun.

I'd much prefer to prioritize my time, heighten my effeciency so as to allow for the maximum use of my frivolous time to be fun and just allow me to enjoy that time, rather than to think "why are we talking about this?".

What's your frivolous joy?

We have many reasons that we are occasionally frivilous, but this business is a serious one.

Good morning Claude. Frivilous is a great word. I like to stroll antique shows or garage sales. Don't always buy but enjoy the process.

Claude Labbe ~ I love the extra attention you've given to "frivolous" and I am not being "frivolous" when I say that either.... Awesome post and better word

Laura Cerrano Yes, serious, but we sure can work to enjoy it and have fun too.

Wayne and Jean Marie Zuhl When the team first came to DC, the big archrivals were the Phillies. Surely you weren't here doing those games....surely.

Sheila Anderson Garage sales & antique shows & flea markets can be such stress-busters for people.

Jon Kolsky funny...puns and all, which just enhances the joy in our language.

Claude Labbe love your post, and had a smile when thinking my frivolous behavior would be to sleep past 7 am!    Knowing when I get into my email there will already be many thinking I was already up and at it!

Inna Ivchenko We did close, but I do prefer the easier non-frivolous ones.  And I hope you are staying out of the downpours.

Joan Cox You're the early morning robin.  I'm the night owl.  But emails do mean we can converse across space & time. Fortunately.  And that's a great frivolous you've got.
