Not a big thing, part of life.ASK AN AMBASSADOR:  CURTAINS!  Foiled Again!!

There's a reason we prefer to blog earlier in the day rather than later in the day.  The earlier in the day, the less likely circumstances start dictating our actions.  Take last night for instance.  We'd gotten our blog post up earlier in the day, but (as happened frequently lately), Rain play time had been pretty limited.  Comment time in particular has taken a big hit lately, and sometimes it's into the evening (sometimes LATE in the evening) before the opportunity presents to visit our Rain friends.

Last night, CURTAINS.  A quick check on Facebook and it was apparent it wasn't just us.  So the plans of mice and men, etc., no comments to leave.

Now before fretting over AR maintenance, we always figure they've got a good reason to take down the site, especially in a case like that where it's unannounced (unless we missed something).

For those newer to the platform, the CURTAINS screen is actually VERY infrequent nowadays.  Once upon a time in a galaxy far far away (oh wait, shouldn't have watched that movie trailer)....anyhooo....downtime used to be pretty common, and pretty frequent.  For all the "evil" attributed to Trulia and the syndicators, a tip of the cap needs to be given to them and the crew that stabilized ActiveRain.  Hardware and software updates were made and the CRUCIAL tasks we need to do (like BLOG) can be performed with only rare disruption.  And I haven't seen Raincoat Chihuahua in weeks!

Yes, I consider it MY fault if I hit submit on a post without FIRST having a copied version somewhere because I SHOULD know better (insert quote about those who fail to learn from the past are doomed to repeat it).

But outside of that, the bulk of the AR glitches fall into what I consider MINOR annoyances (although your threshold for pain may be different than mine!).

But lessons learned from the days of yorn:

  • POST EARLY, just in case AR OR your life gets wonky
  • Be prepared to clear cookies/cache after CURTAINS have appeared
  • And be prepared for some things to maybe be a bit quirky after the curtains are lifted (e.g. today our email notifications and My Home notifications are AWOL).
  • Check the AR FB pages if you're having trouble and you can quickly find out if it's just you, or all of us.

But all in all, no biggie.  So we missed some chances at commenting yesterday, we can make some extra comments today.  The Rain is still our favorite place on the web.

BLiz: I post early AM because it works best for my schedule. I try to comment whenever time allows during the day and sometimes that just doesn't happen to the level I like.

Bliz, posting early is a good habit to adapt, I post whenever I have the time to do so, fortunately, curtain has been staying up for the majority of the time.

Great advise Bliz!  We're all very busy this time of year and it's a stretch to pop into the rain some days.

Thanks Will!

Tom, I've done it to myself a few times (even simple things like hitting spellcheck can be hazardous).  I TRY to learn :)

Alexandra, I think I got in a total of TWO comments yesterday.  Oh well, wasn't staying up past midnight Eastern Time to get more in.

Anita, Posting early keeps me from getting the shakes :)  I like to remove the stress and know we've added one more day to our consecutive days run.

Beth, I have some days it's later (especially over the last few weeks).  I don't like waiting until 7 p.m. to click Submit.

AB, We SHOULD be heading for a bit of a lull, but with real estate who ever knows for sure?

Unfortunately, I do not blog early.  I have to get it in when I can.  I always try and blog early, but it just does not seem to work.  Good advice!

That is one thing we never used to have to do is clear all our cookies off of our computer search engines when we came back from my curtain call. Yes I was trying to post last night when I got home from work and got caught with the AR curtains closed Liz and Bill Spear

Lisa, It's my preference, but each of us needs to do what works for us.

Paul, I know I USUALLY don't have to clear them (didn't need to this morning), but I've had (and others have) a few occasions of thinking AR is down but everyone else is on.  Clearing them out seems to do the trick.

Hi Bliz - I got to experience just a bit of the tail end of the bad old days, and I agree that things are much better now, even with the minor glitches we still see. The great news is that we have a platform that really cares about our experience here, unlike so many other places out there, and they're doing everything they can to make it better for us.

Liz & Bill, the good so outweighs the bad and the minor interruptions, that I don't get too concerned when the curtains go down. I know they go down because something needs to be fixed, and they will come up soon enough.

Dick, I've never doubted they want the best for this community.  At one point I could rightfully doubt they had the resources to make it work, but no doubt about that now.  A lot of the gnashing of teeth items nowadays don't even make me blink.

Troy, Exactly!  They come down to prevent bigger issues.  It's not good for them to be down for an extended period, so I know they'll fix as quickly as possible.

I usually have to post early mainly because I am a morning person.  I don't think my brain even functions after 8 p.m.  Oh the evil curtain, I haven't seen it in awhile, it always reminded me of the wizard hiding from Oz.

Bliz you are correct about not seeing that dreaded curtain as much as we used to. The only thing I am having an issue with at this time is that using the "short URL" link in my blogs to connect to my other blog posts is not working. Did I miss something from AR about this?

Liz, It's rare, and I like that it's rare.  And even rarer is the unexpected one like last night.

Hannah, I've got my preferences, but it doesn't always work out that way.

Jim, I'm not sure on that one.  I haven't used the short URL in quite awhile and can't recall seeing it on a list of issues they're working.  Kris Neese  anything for Jim on that?

BLiz- I must have missed out on the curtain last night.  I tend to post early but often have to make intermittent comments throughout the day.  I must admit that I haven't been able to spend as much time as I normally do here and it seems so odd.  I do agree with your suggestions... check FB because it is there were you might find that there really is a little glitch. And the second point is just that.. .it usually is a little glitch.. nothing like what used to go on.

I wasn't prepared for that glitch and the curtains went down before I got to post. Fortunately, I was up late enough to make it happen anyway.
