What's it all about, Alfie?

You have to be working your way towards retirement to have any idea what this headline means...or you have to be a movie buff with a passion for old movies.

I was following the breaking story of the terrorist attack in Pakistan in which at least 130 people were gunned down today by a murderous bunch of monsters. Couple that with the hostage situation in Australia which took place yesterday, or the hundreds of other senseless acts of violence occurring on a daily basis and I silently said to myself, “What’s it all about?” Habit had me continue the phrase, “What’s it all about…Alfie?”

Alfie was a 1966 British movie; which starred Michael Caine. Caine played a young, selfish womanizer with no apparent socially redeeming qualities. The title song of the movie, What’s It All About, Alfie?, was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. The lyrics go like this…

Is it just for the moment we live?
What's it all about when you sort it out, Alfie?
Are we meant to take more than we give
Or are we meant to be kind?

And if only fools are kind, Alfie
Then I guess it's wise to be cruel
And if life belongs only to the strong, Alfie
what will you lend on an old golden rule?

As sure as I believe there's a Heaven above, Alfie
I know there's something much more
Something even non-believers can believe in
I believe in love, Alfie

When we hear about the actions of the monsters among us, it is easy to close our hearts in an effort to protect ourselves, and the ones we love. If we are not careful, we can let the monsters win by allowing them to steal our joy. They can easily cause us to become cynical, selfish, and uncaring. They can change us without ever firing a shot in our direction.

I included the following in my post yesterday, but it is so good it is worth repeating. It is normally associated with Mother Teresa; however she is not the author.

Mother Teresa's Anyway Poem

People are often unreasonable, illogical and self centered;
Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives;
Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies;
Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you;
Be honest and frank anyway.

What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight;
Build anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous;
Be happy anyway.

The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow;
Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough;
Give the world the best you've got anyway.

You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and your God;
It was never between you and them anyway.

Thomas, I have heard the quote, but never have seen the movie, or heard the song. Now you have me interested in watching it.

Also, love the Anyway Poem

Troy,

Thanks so much for joining in the discussion. The Anyway Poem really is terrific; especially on a day when the world seems like it is on fire.

Have a wonderful holiday!

Tom
