Is Your Email Truly URGENT?

What do you do when the majority of email you receive from a person very important in the day-to-day operations of your business sends email marked as URGENT in the subject line two or three times daily?

Capital LettersPersonally, as a email recipient, I feel as if I’m being shouted at, or even threatened when a sender uses all CAPITAL LETTERs, or OVERSIZED FRONTS in the subject or text.

I’m not sure how to handle this situation as I find it quite annoying, and my day is often interrupted when receiving supposedly URGENT emails from this person.  Is the email BULL or is it important?  I need to take time to stop, whether I’m out and about, or with a client, to thoroughly read the mail for fear I may miss something truly important.

This person has been requested not to identify an email as being URGENT unless it truly is, but it’s obvious these requests have gone in one ear and out the other, and not hit the brick yet.

How would you deal with a sender of email who constantly places the word URGENT in the subject line?

BTW -- the person sending the shouting emails is not a client, but a person working in our brokerage.

Hi Bette Gottwald ,  When I have annoying customers,  I just grit my teeth, smile and hope the closing comes soon.  One in particular was extremely annoying, but has become one of my best referral people since he closed his home.  Sometimes it pays to "Bite your tongue".

Depending on who this person is as far as a business relationship I would do anything from grin and bare it like Larry Johnston would or cut them lose.

Those are people who  have an inflated opinion of their opinions or themselves in general.

So be it.  I feel no compultion to do anything.

In a service business like ours, we all get customers from time to time that are pushy and high maintenance. It sounds like you already requested that they not list every email as urgent yet they continue to do so.

If this emailer is a client, I would mention once more about the urgent emails but I would avoid making a huge argument about it. I would also hope for a quick closing, lol. I have had high maintenance borrowers in the past who ended up being good friends and referral partners.

If this emailer is a colleague/fellow Realtor or someone within your company, I would have a more firm approach and say "knock it off".

Hi Larry, my post wasn't clear, the subject is a person in our office, not a client.  I added a note at the bottom of the post.  Biting my tongue isn't a problem with clients..

Just mark them as spam and your filter should eliminate these emails.

Hi Bette Gottwald - I do not like to have capital letters unless it is from the bank on a short sale or my escrow office. If they say URGENT...it must be.

My natural instinct would be to start shouting back. Maybe then he or she would get the message.
