What does a Realtor do all day anyway?

Wouldn't it be great to be a Realtor so you could work part time and make great money?

Well here is a summary of my day today and I didn't make a dime (yet).  About nine o'clock tonight, I took a break just to add up my communications from today and was shocked at the results:

  • 22 text messages
  • 33 phone calls
  • 52 emails sent
  • 69 unanswered emails (not including junk folders)

What do I have to show for all this at the end of the day?

  • One new offer submitted hope to close in two weeks on a cash sale
  • Counter offer #3 executed by all parites for a back up offer
  • Bank addendums A & B submitted on an REO offer
  • Builder plan and budget looks on track for another buyer
  • Appraisal ordered for a closing by end of year
  • Completed a Property Inspection for a bank prior to foreclosure
  • Video shot for a new listing
  • Confirmation for an open house Saturday
  • New buyer lead for one of my listings
  • Spent 2.5 hours in a New Technology meeting I had planned for an hour
  • Missed a monthly conference call meeting due to other meeting running late

While I spent 10 minutes typing this up at 10pm, I had another 3 texts, another buyer lead from California, and four more emails.

One of my clients taught me a really cool saying this week, "These are priveledged problems".  In a sales business, I won't complain! It is now 10:36pm and I am still blogging and prospecting so that I can be busy again tomorrow and the next day and the next.

A good agent, like loan officer, doesnt watch a clock to decide when and when not to work. Its something in our blood and we just make it happen!!

Jim Paulson it surely is a good problem to have so many activities.

I'd say, if you can pass on some of these to an assistant and focus on productive activities that generates 'dimes' (and I know its easier said than done.)

Absolutely - real estate agents just aren't sitting around eating bon-bons. There's a ton of work to be done.

David Shamansky you are correct, we all have the same amount of time in the day, it is how we utilize it

Praful Thakkar , I used to have an assistant and it is about time to hire anoher - your right.

After tallying those up last night, I feel like I should create a white board in my office to track my business.  If the numbers start dropping, I need to do more prospecting and following up with my past cliens again since that is where most of my business comes from.

Good morning Jim,

I like the fact you live by the creed "people don't care how much you know until they know how much you care." I saw you make this comment on an others post. It's obvious you work hard and care about your clients but I have to agree with Praful Thakkar "if you can pass on some of these to an assistant and focus on productive activities that generates 'dimes' (and I know its easier said than done)." Time to resurrect an assistant!!

Definately plan on getting an assistant again in 2015. I have had a few in the past and this time it will be a "virtual assistant" who can work 4-5 hours a day in the privacy of their home.
