NHL Action A Short Drive From Warren County Ohio: Columbus Blue Jackets
One of the many perks for living in Warren County is you're a short distance from a host of sports activities. Drop a two to three hour drive circle around us and you can find yourself with an abundance of college teams (Ohio State, Miami, UC, Xavier, UK, Louisville and plenty more). Like major league sports? Of course Cincinnati hosts the Reds and the Bengals. You want NBA, head to Indy and catch the Pacers. NHL? That's a short trip up I-71 to Columbus!
And that's exactly what I did last night! Some friends make an annual trip up to catch a Columbus Blue Jackets game at Nationwide Arena every year. Unfortunately in the past my schedule hasn't always been cooperative, but last night was an exception. And sorry all you loyal Blue Jackets fans, but they happened to be playing my favorite team thanks to my Annapolis days, the Washington Capitals! I was in for sure!
The trip up was easy (especially since my friend was driving!). All highway except for the last few blocks to Nationwide Arena. Parking is abundant. Restaurants and bars? The Arena District is packed with them, so come up early and enjoy yourself before the game.
The game itself was terrific! We were about 13 rows behind the home net, and that seemed to be where most of the action was this evening. The Caps were crushing the Blue Jackets 2-0 and outshooting them 15-5. The next period, they must have swapped jerseys because the Jackets were the ones outplaying the Caps and two power play goals later we're tied at 2 all going into the deciding period.
The 3rd period was back and forth, with the Blue Jackets taking the lead twice, but the Caps matching them each time. So after a short break, OT! And in less than a minute the Caps scored the winning goal! Again, sorry about your luck Blue Jackets fans! The Blue Jackets were on a 7 game winning streak and the Caps hadn't lost outright in 5 games (although OT and shootouts haven't always went their way)!
And even if you're not a huge puckhead, you'll have fun at a game! They keep plenty of things going, with gifts being dropped from a blimp, competitions for nuttiest fans...please dude, put your shirt back on!!!, the Kisscam (funny when the one guy says "that's my sister!", free pizza coupons tossed into the crowd (Papa John). And yes, it's kind of LOUD!!!! All in all, a fun night out. For more info on schedules, ticket prices and more, just click the link at the top of the post.
