Challenger Middle School History
Challenger Middle School began in 1996 for 6 thru 8th grade with it's roots starting back in 1987 for 7th graders only. The school is named in honor of the space shuttle Challenger. On January 28, 1986 the space shuttle disintegrated immediately after take off. Her entire 7 man crew lost their lives including the first teacher in space, Mrs. Christa McAuliffe. She was a social studies teacher that considered herself as getting to take the ultimate field trip. Her motto, "I touch the future, I teach." The school has adopted this motto to be their own as, "We touch the Future; We Teach". On the school grounds is a full-size mosaic of the Space Shuttle Challenger. The school's Mascot is, Christa the Cheetah, honoring Christa McAuliffe. During the 8th grade East Coast Field Trip the students usually visit the Arlington National Cemetery to place a wreath at the memorial site to honor the astronauts who perished during the Challenger accident.
Challenger Middle School has a GATE program, After School Sports Club, Dad's Club, Spelling Bee, Science Olympiad, Jazz Band, East Coast Trip, and much more.
