Originally the primary social, commercial and educational center of Cherokee County, the city of Canton has a long history as a major center of trade. Rich agricultural land and natural resources have brought the town a great deal of financial success over the years. Cotton, marble and gold have all been successful industries here.
Centrally located in Cherokee County with a rapidly growing population of over 15,000, Canton is 16 miles outside of Roswell and 34 miles north of Atlanta. The city remains the main center of government, health care and industrial development for the county.
Though most homes in the area are newer construction, Canton boasts a wealth of buildings and districts on the National Register of Historic Places. Among these is the Canton Theatre a grand building that's been bringing Broadway productions to downtown Canton for over 90 years. Downtown Canton streets feature brick sidewalks, lamp posts and landscaping that highlight the historic character of the district. The City holds free concerts and movies in Heritage Park throughout the summer along with numerous festivals and special events throught the year. A friendly Trolley runs from downtown Canton to Riverstone plaza everyday.
