Distracted Driving Ordinance Austin, TX ~Effective Jan. 1, 2015

Starting January 1, 2015 Austin drivers need to keep your hands on the steering wheel and stay off your cell phones! While your vehicle is in motion you’d better adhere to no texting, touching your cell phones, laptops, GPS or other electronic devices! This applies to cyclists too!

Drivers and cyclists can touch devices if they are lawfully stopped at a red light, during standstill traffic or if they are trying to contact emergency services. No devices of any kind can be used in a school zone.

Smartphones and other devices can be used if they are mounted to the car dashboard. Bluetooth or similar devices or earphones as long as only one earbud is being used can be utilized by motorists.

Violators will face potential fines of up to $500.

The new law is intended to limit driver’s distractions and the goal is to make Austin roads safer! It’s our responsibility to adhere to the new ordinance….it just might save your life, your family and others.

Dorie: I hope this is enforced. There are way too many unsafe drivers out there who are fiddling with their devices while driving.

Good morning, Dorie -- the law is more restrictive in California but there isn't a day that I don't see someone in the vehicle next to me talking or texting while driving.   Here's hoping people in Austin are more law abiding.

Good morning Dorie.  All I can say is thank God for the restrictions but I have to agree with Michael Jacobs - New York is very strict but there is not enough enforcement.

Good morning Dorie, let's just hope it will be enforced. I see too many drivers texting while driving all over the road.

Like Michael Jacobs I see many violations daily. We even can predict it by the erratic driving, and we just deal with it. The law has been around for a couple of years now. A

Dorie a $500 fine is serious money for most people.  With all the Bluetooth devices available which are far cheaper than $500, it is still for anyone to not purchase one if they have the need to be on the phone while driving.  As far as texting goes, I can't think of a text message so important that it can't wait until there is an opportunity to pull the car over to the side of the road to respond.

Dorie, I think it's a good law.  Technically, it there shouldn't be a need for it as anything that distracts from driving is already illegal but then again, nowadays everything needs to be spelled out!

Good morning Dorie. Once a few people get a $500 fine, the new should travel pretty fast. It is a real problem all across the country. Good job by your city.

Hi Michael: It's ridiculous the number of people who text and drive!

Hi Joanna: It will be tough ut maybe after a few $500 fines drivers will put their phones down!

Hi Beth: Me too!

Hi Alexandra: I deal with it every day and hope the law will cut down the distractions..especially the young drivers!

Hi George: Amen!

Hi Silvia: So true!

Hi Marco: I'm with you!

Hi Joe: The $500 fine will be given..so drivers beware!
