No, She Didn't Know...

Home Inspector with Complete Home Inspections, Inc. TN Lic#050

One's taste in music, especially Christmas music, is deeply personal. For some, the notes resonate to and within the bosom of the individual. To me, there is no greater bond between two people than there is between a mother and her baby. This is not to discount the love that fathers have for their children. However, there is a special love that only mothers have that transcends the earthly realms and soars to the very footstool of God. Sadly, most men cannot comprehend or have this type of love.
To me, one of the prettiest songs that has been written in recent times dwells on that special love. The song did not start out as a song; rather, it started out as questions for a musical that was put on in a church here in Nashville, Tennessee in 1984. Mark Lawry imagined what Mary might have been thinking while she was holding her firstborn, Jesus. A series of questions of what he would like to ask her came to mind. The actors recited these questions between acts in the play.
However, Mark always  felt that the questions needed to be a song. In 1990 Mark approached Buddy Green, a well-known local harmonica player and songwriter, and asked him to put music to the questions. It was the collaboration of these two Nashvillians that gave the world, "Mary Did You Know?"

This is probably my favorite Christmas song, ok, maybe tied with O Holy Night, but I just love it.  If you have not heard the Pentatonix version, check them out on YouTube.  It is sensational.  Merry Christmas!

Hi Michael - Thanks for the history lesson. It's amazing at the talent walking among us here. I went to Landmark booksellers in Franklin yesterday to pick up a few books for Elizabeth and when the owner asked me what I was searching for, I explained that my wife wanted a few books from Rick Warrick for Christmas, and what did he recommend. He said that I should just ask Rick himself since he was sitting on on the couch.

So after all these years of living in Franklin, I finally had a chance to meet the guy who is considered the true expert on Franklin history, with many books to show for it. I know, because I bought 8 of them yesterday.

Have a Merry Christmas

Those are wonderful words you have written about the song, Michael!  In today's lexicon, when Mary looked at her baby the first time, and then again when he was in his early 30s, she would have likely thought, "Who knew!"

That's a beautiful and very moving song. I loved it! It exemplifies the true meaning of Christmas that many people overlook when they think of Christmas shopping. It's about the birth of Jesus and not commercialism.

Thank you for spreading the word with great video and song.

Blessings to you Michael and your family too.

Believe it or not, I never heard this version -- the first time I heard this song was years ago at a church, by a woman with an absolutely beautiful voice.  I fell in love with the song but had no idea where it came from. Thanks for sharing.

Michael, I saw this on Bob Crane's re-blog. Very VERY powerful and it begs to stop and ponder the perspective that this takes about the relationship that Mary and Jesus shared....with ALL of us.

Thank you so much for the enlightenment!
