Maryland Lead Paint Law Changes January 1, 2015

Starting January 1, 2015, the Maryland law governing the disclosure of lead based paint is changing.  On January 1, 2015 all residential rental property built prior to 1978 will have to be registered with the Maryland Department of the Environment and follow certain requirements.

The registration fee is $30 per unit per year and must be registered before December 31.

If you have never registered with the MDE before you should contact the Rental Registry Devision for a tracking number at 410-537-4199 or 1-800-776-2706.  If you have already registered you can renew your license here.

If your property is vacant, you must have the property registered with the MDE and lead inspected by a MDE accredited inspector BEFORE a tenant moves in and all work you have done to meet the inspection standards must be done by a lead certified contractor.

For more information about the lead program you can visit here for questions and answers.

June Piper-Brandon You are getting the word out!  We don't have to register ours, just do the Lead Based Paint disclosure.  Are there other states that require this?  I've never heard of it being done that way.

Hi June -- in California, we have various disclosures that address lead-based paint on properties built prior to 1978 but there is no need to register rental properties.   I wonder if this is more about increasing state revenues than public safety.
