How ActiveRain is Reducing "Six Degrees of Separation"

I think everyone has heard the phrase, "six degrees of separation". It's a theory that states that everyone on the planet has a connection with someone else through six "people links". It has been tested a number of times by scholars over the past 20 years and although the theory has not been proven, the results suggest that the average number of "intermediaries" for people having no known connection, is in fact, six individuals! Surprising!

How ActiveRain Is Reducing "Six Degrees of Separation"As I was commenting on blogs this week, it struck me that since last year at this time I've gotten to know a whole lot of new people through ActiveRain, most of whom live in various parts of the country. Is that reducing my six degrees to five? Hmmm. Maybe.

Granted, I know some better than others. There's a tendency to comment on the blogs by certain people because you feel a "connection" to them. It could be their writing style or things that you discover about them through reading their blogs that attract you. Connections like this are an under-appreciated benefit of ActiveRain--especially by those just arriving on the scene.

I've been working at finding new bloggers, people who just started on ActiveRain. If you go to your Home page and look for the tab, "Find Blogs To Read"on the left hand side, you'll see the category, "First Blog Posts". It's exciting to read posts from people starting out on this great adventure. You might add them to the list of people you follow. As far as I know, there's no limit to the number of people you can follow!

I've also noticed an interesting thing AR is doing (and I suspect it is intentional), there are a lot of "new" folks being featured! I like that! Let's meet more individuals who have something worthwhile to say. One critical comment, it would be fabulous if AR could change the Featured Posts every day! That would be a wonderful improvement!

Are you expanding the number of your AR contacts? Are you seeking out AR members who are not part of your "regular" group? I'm not sure I've reduced my "six degrees of separation" to something less, but I know I'm enjoying the process of getting there.

Sadly Tom, I am wittling down whom I follow. Some great people are no longer writing here on AR which is a shame.

Odd that I never met you or Tammy when you lived in Bartlett & we were living so close here.

I think the internet in general is reducing the degree of seperation.  However, in most cases I think the connection is shallower.

I only recently learned that some Rainers contact at least one other AR member a week, or more! This is a great way to network, would only take 5 - 10 minutes a week, and is just a great way to meet other professionals.

Hi Tom - thanks for the tip to check on newbie blogs - I had not been seeking new AR contacts other than for specific referrals, but that's a great idea!

Your suggestion and Gayle Rich-Boxman Fishhawk Lake Realtor (503)755-2905 's are both ones I should follow. Unfortunately (or fortunately?) I've been so busy lately that I've barely gotten here to look up what's new with the people I'm following.

Tom, I usually click over to posts by commenters I don't know, and then often follow those bloggers. Reciprocation just seems like the right thing to do, and it makes more sense to me to follow the blogs of people who read mine than it does to just check in and make 10-word comments on featured posts.

Tom,

It seems that some tools allow and help the six go to five.

Some tools do not.

From my perspective, I think ActiveRain does allow for an organic community to build, and hence for real connection.

Tom - I think we do get caught in our own little webs, and it makes sense to try to reduce our degrees of separation.

I agree I like seeing new faces and opinions being featured. The network continues to grow and there is good new talent that needs to be discovered. If time would allow each of us could set out to welcome the Newbies but the reality of it is, we are here to do real estate and make a living first.

Hmm...never thought about AR in the 6 degrees way, but you bring up an interesting point.

I am so happy to have made "friends" here in the Rain. It is comforting when you have been gone for a little too long that people reach out and wonder where you have been. Relationships are the key to everything.
