Business is like a merry-go-round . . .

Business is like a merry-go-round. You hop on for the ride, but when the gold ring comes around, you've got to grab it and ride on. A lot of riders will go round and round and they'll be as happy as they can be, but for some riders, the turning of the merry-go-round is just a transport to the next destination.

When the Internet became an integral part of marketing, it became the brass ring for those who were paying attention. I'm always amazed at the number of Realtors I meet that have no idea of the Internet's value.

In a meeting about two years ago, I was the only agent out of couple dozen that had a website. In an Inman meeting that same year, agents were asked if they blogged or where they going to blog. About 30-50 said they do blog or they were going to start blogging. There were nearly 500 agents in the room. Another brass ring missed.

Today, mobile apps and the ability for clients to find you with a readable mobile site is a new brass ring. I have a feeling if those same agents who were in a room in the previous examples were asked about mobile sites the results would be the same. "A mobile what? Don't bother me, I'm enjoying the merry-go-round."

A lot of agents have such a big reputation that they can live off of that, and their sphere of influence if large enough to keep the work rolling in today. The reality is, the new wave of agents who are using the latest brass ring to gain market-share are also building their sphere of influence and their database every time they close a sale from their brass ring. At some point in the future, they'll have the reputation, sphere of influence and the brass ring.

You are so right! I am just amazed at how many agents in my own brokerage do not blog at all! They don't even know what Active Rain is or they say they have heard of it just to save face.

If you have heard of AR then you want to be in on this great deal.

Bill, you would be amazed. I see a lot of agents who have their photo stuck on a franchise site, but a lot don't have any web presence beyond that. Happy New Year, and I hope you have your best year yet.

You are right Mike. As I look back I never would have thought business would be where we are today. Most of us have to adapt or else retire.

When I was researching who I wanted to use as my website provider I made sure it was mobile friendly. Everyone's going mobile so you better get on the train before it leaves you behind.

I'd never tell any of my Lenders to abandon what is working for them ... but I DO strongly suggest that they stay current, be aware, and utilize the tools and tech that is currently available to them (and their clients too).  Ways of capturing and doing business change ... you're so right about that, Mike Cooper.   We need to adapt to and embrace that change ...

Said it all...and very well, indeed.   It's essential to be using the "item" of the moment, always.

Mike

This is such a good analogy and such an accurate reflection of what has been happening, and continues to happen as technology changes. That is not to say one should abandon what is working, but to evaluate that in light of other possibilities, especially as the habits of the buying and selling public are shifting

There's loads of truth in your words, Mike!  It seems to be those who stay current with technological changes that are among the most successful.  They evolve with the industry.  I also agree with Jeff Dowler, it's important to not entirely abandon what is working, if it still is!

I don't have an app but now I'll look to see what it takes to get one.  Had a web site for years.

I hear this all the time. Agents have no idea what can happen through a good website and blog. It doesn't help that real estate brokers are still pedaling the old school ways of getting business. I'm not saying they aren't successful but I'm finding my average price point is much higher through internet leads than my sphere. You would think it would be the opposite but I'm able to attract buyers who are looking formillion dollar properties. That's not something my sphere is doing.
