Make an Impression in 20 Seconds

Imagine riding in an elevator and only having a few floors—or 20 seconds—to make a positive first impression. That's where effective elevator speeches come in. The elevator speech is your quick answer to the question, "What do you do?"

If you tell people, "I'm a financial planner," "I'm a real estate agent," or "I'm a builder," think about how many other people can say that, too. What makes you different and sets you apart as a professional?

Effective elevator speeches can take many forms. In fact, you may create different versions to use for different audiences. The key to an effective elevator speech is to be memorable, in addition to being informative.

Here are three suggestions to help you create yours:

Deliver Dreams
Your elevator speech may share the dreams you help your clients realize rather than just your job title.

"I help people retire in their 50s, so they can travel the world."

"I open the door to dream homes for families in all stages of life."

Highlight Expertise
Your elevator speech may highlight a specific niche or expertise in a complicated, highly regulated arena.

"I specialize in helping small business owners and entrepreneurs tackle tax season with ease, so they can focus on their business success."

"I specialize in sustainable building, helping homeowners plan energy efficient and environmentally friendly homes."

Showcase Honors
Professional achievements and honors can be an important selling feature to establish business credibility. If you have claim to recent recognition as an individual or an organization—be it local, regional or national—have an elevator speech to celebrate that.

"I'm proud to be part of a team of financial planners who've received the highest client satisfaction rating three years in a row."

Please feel free to pass these great tips along to your team, clients and colleagues!

Very well said, Keith!   We should tell people what we can do for them, not who we are.

I believe in elevator speech.  It is something that can make a big difference.
