As @Belinda Spillman described in her Pay It Forward ActiveRain Challenge For December, there are many things you can do to make a difference.
Just over a year ago, my wife and I responded to an offering of a “BackStage” tour of the weekly production of a Church, whos assembly is at Windward Mall movie theatres. This led us volunteering on the "Servant's Ministry" team, assisting one Sunday each month, 5:30AM to about 10-10:30 AM, and this team feeds up to 100 volunteers.
This consists of bringing from home, a dish or dishes of food, such as cooked turkey bacon, cooked dozens of fresh eggs, made Chicken Adobo and other foods. A small multitude of Church members have dedicatedly brought dishes of fruits, vegetables, rice, fried rice, Chili, soups, stews on and on. Many of these selfless people have gone above and beyond in their work of helping hands. My wife and I only work to layout, setup and display the nourishment with the guidance of our gracious and kind team leader, “Aunty Grace”. The Servant’s Ministry exists to feed the numerous workers and Pastoral Staff who tirelessly begin their day as early as 4:00 AM in setting up and converting the theater multiplex into a Church every Sunday to accommodate around 1,100-1,200 people in 3 services, 7AM 8:30AM and 10:00AM.
December 21, 2014 was the annual Christmas Production attracting 500 additional visitors from varied walks of life. I volunteered to be on a special set up team beginning at 4:30AM. On that day, we worked to prepare 1,600 Parfaits. All visitors would get a Parfait, Starbucks Coffee, juice, water, cookies and donuts. At 6:30, I went in the back and helped cook 20-25 dozen eggs for the Servant’s Ministry. Then at 8:00 went back out front to help direct traffic entering and exiting 4 theaters. At 8:40 went into a Church Service with my wife and visiting daughter. Then after that service, went back out to help direct walking traffic again.
After being tired and exhausted, it felt good on several levels. 1. Although my wife thought she would be sitting in service by herself, our daughter, Mrs. Kanoe Eiselin came to Church with her and I did get to sit through most of the service with them both. 2. On a higher level, it felt wonderful to be a part of blessing others with Aloha and seeing the bright faces of people I did not know.
I was one of over 200 volunteers and hope that the little contribution helped to brighten at least one person’s life that day. See the reason for lights on a tree.As in this video at minutes 15-22 .
Where @Belinda Spillman exclaimed in her blog, it was truly a Pay It Forward ActiveRain Challenge For December. I will gladly do it again next year.
