When I think of "Paying it Forward" over the holidays I get excited because so many choose to focus on this as a giving season. Our hearts are filled with gratitude for the many blessings we have and it spills over into sharing with others. I love this time of year.
For most of us, however, it's a little uncomfortable to write about the things we've done for others. We prefer to do it in secret so that credit is not received for doing something that seems as natural as breathing. I do feel that way.
In truth, everyday is an opportunity to pay it forward.
I was standing in line at the local library to check out a book. The person next to me didn't have the money to pay a fine he owed on some books he was returning. I smiled, paid his fine and walked out of the library. No big deal. It's just what you do!
A friend of mine lives alone in a shack (literally) down the road from our house. He's 88 years old, but in fairly good health. Whenever I see him outside his house puttering about, I stop the car and talk to him for about 15 or 20 minutes. I know he looks forward to our conversations, as I do. He's got a great sense of humor and tells me stories of how he farmed many of the acres near where he now resides. He also explains in great detail his latest medical condition! That's OK. I love our frequent talks. It's just what you do!
This year our Sunday School group took on providing Christmas for a family in our church who was in a difficult financial position. We all bought gifts and one person anonymously delivered them. Pretty cool, actually. It's just what you do.
The holiday season is wonderful in that it focuses attention on something that people love to do--share. But by now you get what I'm saying.
Paying it forward is an everyday lifestyle, not an event. Knock your socks off, sharing with others!
