New Year’s Organizing Solutions for Your House

three....two...one....Happy Organizing!

If getting organized is high on your list of New Year’s resolutions, yo have come to the right place. One of the main reasons people abandon their New Year’s resolutions is because they find that their goal is too difficult to accomplish or they have no plan for actually making headway on that goal. This is where we can help. We’ve compiled a list of quick, easy, and stylish ways to organize your home in the New Year.

1.      De-clutter and throw away. The first step of any organizing endeavor should be to throw out anything you no longer use or like. If you have clothes, tchotchkes, plates, cups, books, etc. that are just sitting around your house but are never actually worn, used, or enjoyed, it’s time to get rid of them. This will open up more space for the things you actually like and do use.

2.      Put all similar things together. If you always have difficulty finding that one baking dish or spice you need, it’s time to change how you organize your kitchen. Put all of your pans in one cupboard, you baking dishes in another. Utensils in one drawer. Instead of having a hodge-podge of a kitchen, you’ll know exactly where everything is.

3.      Invest in a few lazy Susans. If you ever have to completely unload a cupboard in order to find one thing, you could benefit from a lazy Susan. With one of these turntables in your cupboard, all you have to do is spin the lazy Susan and you can see everything stored in that cupboard. They even make two-tiered designs, for even more storage possibilities.

4.      Label, label, label. Especially if you use bins or baskets to organize cupboards or shelves, use labels to help you remember what each bin or basket contains. This makes it much easier to find what you’re looking for, without having to open and dig through every container.

5.      Use tensile rods or adjustable shelves to create more storage. A tensile rod can be used under a kitchen sink as a hanging rack for spray bottles and rubber gloves. They can also help store things like cutting boards or plates, by helping to hold the item upright in the cabinet. Adjustable shelves give you the ability to create more headroom on some shelves and keep others short and compact.

Organizing your home doesn’t have to be time consuming and it definitely doesn’t have to be difficult. If you pick one room per weekend, you can easily power through your entire home, without getting burned out. Get rid of the things you don’t need, store like items together, and make sure any storage bins are labeled so you can always find what you’re looking for. Once your home is organized, your space will be calmer and your life will be as uncluttered as your home.

Kimberly M Addelman Great list to get started organizing.  I especially like the idea of decluttering.
