The Grab Bag - What's Inside a Wristwatch?

By

I'm a member of a vanishing species - I still wear a watch, a lifelong habit I have no real desire to give up. And while I've never much wanted a really expensive one, I'm not wearing a plastic digital Casio either.

I've always looked at Rolex watches as somewhat over the top, gaudy and expensive. So I don't really know why I bothered to look at the video below - a six-minute walk-through of the dis-assembly and re-assembly of a Rolex Submariner, one of their more sensible looking models, but at around $7,500 still seemingly something that would be bought as a status symbol rather than a working timepiece.

I do, however, have a huge respect for craftsmanship. And while this watch isn't by any means new technology, it is exquisitely constructed from an incredible number of gem-like intricate parts. For this one watch, at least, I can begin to understand the price tag. I've never given much thought as to exactly what goes into a watch, but the video is a real eye-opener. Give it a look - it's worth the time:

Love to have a watch and enjoyed the video of the highly skilled person working with that watch!

I agree with you on the Rolex. When I was younger I had a submariner and then decided I didnt need it and sold it and now wear a much bigger watch and much more reasonable for cost. Some things are just not necessary

Happy New Year

My question--how does he remember which part goes where? Is there a book like Legos provide?

My husband loves watches and has several. I think we'll be surprised in the coming years about the popularity of watches increasing again but it's a different kind of watch that's becoming popular. Rolexes and Breitlings are considered old man watches. The younger crowd wants Nixons and Fossils.

Dick, you can call me a fossil (the old kind, not the watch), but I love wearing a watch. It's easier to glance at for the time rather than pulling out my phone.

I never knew there were so many layers to a good watch. This was very interesting. But I think I'll stick with my cell phone for a time piece.

If I tried that, I would have had a couple of pieces left over, Dick.  Wow....and he really knows how to reassemble them in no time!!  LOL!

Dick, My first husband could and would take watches apart and put them back together. And surprisingly they worked. I guess you have to have a knack or a gift for that. It is so intricate.

Dick, a friend of mine picked up a Rolex at an estate sale for $150.  She had it cleaned up and authenticated (it's real) and even though it's a guy watch, she wears it and it looks great.  A lot of them are pretty simple in design - as this one was.  Now I'm thinking about it, although estate sales might not be the best place to shop for one.

"Stuff" had me out of the Rain quite a bit this week.  What a cool post and video.  Although I never owned a Rolex, I wore a watch every day, but for some reason stopped.

Dick: I was mesmerized by how effortlessly he made it look (obviously years of practice). With so many intricate pieces it is amazing they rarely break down.

My husband has a wrist watch. There is one guy around who still will clean and service it.  The watch is a piece of art.

Much like our real estate business. How would we train an assistant to come in and learn our business? We would have to deconstruct and reconstruct the model and show them the system. Think like the makers of Rolex.

I still wear  a watch too Dick.  I stopped for a long time, but once I started back, I don't know how I lived without it.

All I can say is 'Wow'. What an interesting video! I have not worn a watch since I got my first cell phone. I just look at the time on there.
