I'm a member of a vanishing species - I still wear a watch, a lifelong habit I have no real desire to give up. And while I've never much wanted a really expensive one, I'm not wearing a plastic digital Casio either.
I've always looked at Rolex watches as somewhat over the top, gaudy and expensive. So I don't really know why I bothered to look at the video below - a six-minute walk-through of the dis-assembly and re-assembly of a Rolex Submariner, one of their more sensible looking models, but at around $7,500 still seemingly something that would be bought as a status symbol rather than a working timepiece.
I do, however, have a huge respect for craftsmanship. And while this watch isn't by any means new technology, it is exquisitely constructed from an incredible number of gem-like intricate parts. For this one watch, at least, I can begin to understand the price tag. I've never given much thought as to exactly what goes into a watch, but the video is a real eye-opener. Give it a look - it's worth the time:
