Breaking Old Habits Like Procrastinating

Happy New Year's to everyone!    I have always enjoyed New Year's because it gives me the opportunity to think about my goals.   In some ways, I'm a very much a long term planner.  At other times, I live from moment to moment.     My worst habit is procrastinating.      Yet breaking a bad habit, such as procrastinating is hard.  You can’t see it.  You can’t throw it away.  You can’t really count how many times you procrastinate every hour or every day.

Horse Running in the Snow So, I’ve come up with an idea that I’ll experiment with.    I have a list of things that I want to do today – such as writing a blog post and processing some photographs.  Yet, I found myself starting to rationalize why I shouldn’t sit down at the computer and just process the pictures or write the blog post.

I thought about this picture of my horse.  She just took off running and snow is flying everywhere.   She is a vision of power and movement.   She got from point A to point B very fast.    Maybe that is what I should do when I find myself procrastinating  and trying to rationalize why I don’t have time to do something.  I should just run and do it.

So….here is my blog and along with a picture for the day.

I wish you each the best in accomplishing your New Year’s resolutions/goals.

Sincerely,

Sondra Meyer

Hi Sondra - Happy New Year! I think a certain amount of procrastination is hardwired into me, but I've learned to make it work for me by becoming skilled at beating deadlines - sometimes just barely, but somehow it all gets done.

Some of my favorite anti-procrastination quotes:

Procrastination is the thief of time.  Do it now!   Why put off until tomorrow what you can do today?   Successful people do what failures put off doing.

Sondra-I too am a long range planner and am a procrastinator as well. Love the pic of your horse, However you can have that snow, One of the things I used to do a lot to help me accomplish something was to make a list of what I wanted to accomplish for the day. It is amazing the feeling you get as you cross the items off. I have gotten away from making a list but want to accomplish many things this year so will get back to making those lists. Heres to less procrastination for both of us this yr.

Well done Sondra, you succeeded! I, too, am good at procrastinating. I'll follow your lead (and your horse's) and just get up and run with it.

Happy new year!

Hi, there, Stranger. I'm glad to hear from you. I love your picture. Just do it...that's what I say. Take the thing on your list you least want to do and get it done first. That certainly helps me.

Happy New Year Sondra. I like that you are working to tackle that bothersome procrastination situation of yours. It is really a matter of focus and because I know you are this great thinker you have many irons in the fire and probably start one thing then flit over to another without seeing an earlier one through. Don't beat yourself up too much about your nature just work like you said with the horse STAYING WITH the point A to point B line. Practice makes perfect Sondra. You can do it!!

Sondra - For some tasks, I can procrastinate with the best of them!  Sometimes, you just have to get moving... and get it done.  Maybe not perfection, but completed and on to the next one.  Best wishes for a healthy and prosperous 2015.

Sondra, you just re re-minded me (yes, reminded me again!) about a post that I want to write, so thank you for the nudge! I think fear is a procrastinating tool...at least it is for me. I will put off phone calls that are going to be uncomfortable for example, or something that doesn't make me happy, anxious, maybe.

ANYWAY, I'm happy to see your post and I DO love the photo!

Sondra, it can be so difficult to deal with the tasks that are "our" least favorite. I like the horse photo and it reminds me I've got a big burst of energy to handle a few jobs today. Off to get er done. ;)

What a great blog - you are right procrastination won't help you succeed, you need to run like your horse and get it done!  Good luck with you goal in 2015.  :)
