Could You Live in 200 Square Feet?  Apartment Living That’s Changing Urban Life!

Perhaps, these people who buy these 200 square foot apartments only live there during the work week…I can’t imagine not having any space to sprawl out, let alone have a guest or two.

These condos and apartments remind me of college dorms, and isn’t that why older students rent off campus to get away from dorm life?

I can understand the small house movement….at least you don’t have someone over you, under you and on both sides, let alone across the hall.  And, normally you know that where you are situated with that will be secure in some respects from a huge increase in your rent of the land or taxes.

What do you think?  Could you live so small?  I love my pets and my Chief Cook, not necessarily in that order, but it would be hard for me to find a way of life without any one of them.

Chime in….do you live small?  Or are you considering it?  Why?  I know some motivation is to contain costs, but that can’t be all of it.

Let us know….

Best, Ron

I don't think I could live in something that small but we certainly only live in a home that meets our needs. Nothing more, nothing less. There isn't one room in my house that doesn't get used.

I can't even imagine living in something so small.  I watch that HGTV show sometimes about the tiny houses and it boggles my mind.  Maybe for a weekend, but then I would need to bust out.

Hello Ron,

Live in 200 square feet...isn't that a closet?!!  No, I can not live in 200 square feet...and I hope I never have too!

Hi Ron,  I love those tiny homes and really think I could do it.  Not sure where my two dogs would hang out, but it would be fun to try.

Ron, No we do not live small even though our home has little room for anything new. We talk about downsizing but even if we did it would not be small. I have no idea how people cam live in 200 sq ft. You are correct as it does sound like a dorm room. Even when I lived in a dorm room there was always one large room for anyone to sit in or do whatever plus a TV room.

Hi Ron - Mary is quite taken with the tiny house thing, but I don't think either of us could do it, particularly if we consider the other members of the pack. I doubt they would actually care, but we get enough of that every night packing all 6 of us into a king size bed.

Let's see, that is the equivalent of a 20 x 10 room...or smaller than a 2 car garage.  I guess if I got rid of everything I own and wore the same clothes every day, maybe...it is bigger than the average prison cell!

Like Dick, I would find it hard to live in those circumstances because of our pets, but also because of my cookware, cookbooks, and, in general, YOU!

Ron,  I would definitely go crazy in 200 square feet.  It might be fun for a day, but that's it.

I think 200 square feet is a tough one, but believe me, most NYC one bedroom apartments are somewhere in the vicinity of 500 square feet so it is not so tough I guess - particularly if it isn't full time!

Hi Ron -- I find "small living" quite intriguing and believe most of us have too much "stuff".  That said, 200 square feet requires items that are more than just multi-tasking.   It brings new meaning to minimalism and simplification.

Good morning Ron.

Wow...200 Sq Ft is a little tight!  Yes, we have downsized and are happy with our decision but 200 Sq Ft wouldn't work for us for a happily ever after.

Not me, Ron.  Isn't that considered a walk-in closet? Where would my cat sleep?

There is no way with the wife, the child and the dog, that that would work for me....but I can see it for some.

Ron,

I could not do it period! I am from Texas where everything is big seriously we need to downsize and we figured around 3000 we almost pulled the trigger in December then it was not quite the home but I did sell it!

200 feet is a bit small. But downsizing can be a good thing.

No I am not interested in that now but that is what assisted living coulc be like. I guess if you have health issues it wouldn't matter so much.

No, couldn't live in that small of space. We have a 5-bedroom home now, and one day will downsize, but not anytime soon.

I guess, it would depend.  It would be easier in  a warm climate where you can spend some time outdoors,  I.e. outdoor living spaces...  I cannot imagine being cooped up in such a small space for weeks or months at a time during the winter though.
