It is Time to Get Your Flu Shot Today

Time to Get Your Flu Shot

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the 2015 flu season is going to be severe. California has already had two deaths since Jan. 1, 2015.

Who is at risk? Everyone is so get your shot and follow precautions listed below.

Here are several things you can do to protect yourself against the flu and flu symptoms.

What is Flu?

“The flu” is the shortened term for influenza and is named as such because it is caused by the viruses’ influenza A or B. It is a very contagious respiratory illness. Coughing and sneezing can spread the virus. The viruses attack the upper or lower respiratory tracts and sometimes even both. As compared to the common cold, the flu has more pronounced symptoms with high fever and more body aches. Its effects are also more severe. It can affect the lungs and joints and cause respiratory failure.

Preventative Measures:

·      Wash your hands frequently with soap and water

·      Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth

·      Avoid close contact with sick people

·      Get plenty of sleep and exercise

·      Eat healthy food

·      Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze and

·      Stay home for at least 24 hours if you are sick with flu-like illness.

Symptoms:

·      A high fever or feeling feverish

·      A cough and/or sore throat

·      A runny or stuffy nose

·      Headaches and/or body aches

·      Chills

·      Fatigue

·      Nausea, vomiting, and/or diarrhea

Complications from the flu include:

  • Bacterial pneumonia
  • Ear or sinus infections
  • Dehydration
  • Worsening of prior conditions

The website is designed to help the general public, health care professionals, policymakers, government and business leaders, school systems and local communities. This is a locator website and it asked me to type in my zip code and 45 places who give flu shots were listed along with a map. Here are a few local places who are administering flu shots for a fee or sometimes free based on your insurance.

You should check with your physician before getting the shot but do not wait but call today. Many insurance companies pay for the shot or a portion so check with your health provider, the pharmacy or the clinic where you go for treatment. If you are on Medicare, the government pays for the shot. Don’t forget to bring your insurance or Medicare card with you to the pharmacy.

I just had my flu vaccination in December and it didn't hurt at all nor did I  experience any side-effects.

I too am an anti flu shot person - makes no sense to me to get a shot for something that won't prevent anything - let alone PAY for it (I know many places have free shots).

Thanks for sharing though

Hi Endre Barath, Jr.

I have a few friends who will never get the flu shot. It is definitely a personal choice and I am sure you have your reasons.

Hi Patty,

Yes I hope everyone thinks about getting a shot as having the flu for 2-3 days is miserable and the complications are even worse.

Hi Ron Marshall

I  am always amazed when networks hire chemists to check knobs, buttons on ATM's, faucets in bathrooms, etc and some of the germs just make me cringe. We are exposed to so much so we should do what we can to keep healthy.

Hi Endre Barath, Jr.,

I hear the same thing that you can absolutely NOT get sick from the flu shot. About 15 years ago, we were pressured by our CEO to get the shots and they were free through the County of San Bernardino. I put it off for years and never got sick so I didn't care. Finally I went and had one when County had a health fair. I was just ever so barely nausious but it lasted for 3 months. It did not bother me but I did notice it most of the time. Since, I have had one every year and never had nausea again.

Hi Kristin, Last year I had 4 shots at once. Flu, Pneumonia, Vaccination booster shot and the shingles vaccine. In March I got the flu and it lead to serious sinus and ear infections. In June I got it again and it lasted a month and did further damage to my hearing and I have had a sinus congestion ever since. I haven't taken the flu shot as yet and I am still vacillating about it. Seems I might be just as well off but not saying no as yet.

Hi William Johnson,

I agree with you that maybe the shot is just not for you. Hope your hearing returns to normal. I did not know there was a shingle vacination? And maybe they shouldn't have given the shots to you at the same time?
