Happy New Year, Preparedness... a good time to give it a thought.

Those of us that live in the Pacific Northwest we have a few things to think about, Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Tsunamis oh my. Then throw in a Chemical release just for fun.

I spent 15 plus years as an emergency responder and HazMat technician and we prepared for earthquakes and disasters because it was not if, it was when.

I happened to be in an Emergency Response Team meeting in Seattle when we were hit with the Nisqually Earthquake. Nothing like having most of your emergency team in one room in a brick building in downtown Seattle.

Good morning Donald. It only makes sense that those who live in earthquake areas need to be prepared for earthquakes. Volcanoes? Never heard of that one.

Jay, Sometimes they are mythical here also even though required ;)

Tamra, Sometimes it is good just to think it through.

Micheal, Most of the time Earthquakes and Volcanoes go together, kinda like peas and carrots ;)

We in the NW live in a subduction zone so you have one plate moving under another causing an uplift. We have several active Volcanoes up here. Obviously Mt St Helens is the pretty famous one, But Mt Rainier, Mt Adams, Glacier Peak and Mt Baker are active also and those are pretty large mountains.

I have been to the top of Adams and St Helens pretty awesome places but a real reminder if they blow it could be a mess.

Donald, what you do in your volunteer efforts is extraordinary! My husband is a volunteer paramedic here and we have a huge group of volunteers in our community that support the Mist-Birkenfeld Fire Department, five miles away. When you live out in the country and are secluded, away from services--volunteers can create life or death by being there (or not) in a timely manner.

My husband is the VP of Operations for the largest private ambulance co in the state of OR and just last night, we honored the volunteers in the Vernonia area with beautiful plaques and dinner!
