"It's snow folks!"

It's snow folks!

Fernandina Beach and Jacksonville had about an inch of snow in December of 1989.  My son who was 14 at the time made a video of the neighborhood and of kids playing in the snow.  During the video, Matt often stated: "It's snow folks!"

Since we had snow flurries here today (January 8, 2015) I thought I'd share a few statistics about snow in Jacksonville, Florida.

  • The last trace of snow was on December 26, 2010.
  • The last measurable snowfall was December 22, 1989.
  • The most measurable snow on record (1.9 inches) was on February 13, 1899.
  • Snow usually occurs here about every 6 years.

Sybil, when we aren't use to snow flurries it bring the kid out in us. I use to live in Jacksonville Florida in 87/89 and we had snow one year.

Laura, It's such a rare occurence in north Florida that it's understandable that people get excited.

Ranee, I hope you get to see some snow today too!

Michael Thornton, Tampa used to be south of what we called the "frost line".  I'm not sure if that is still true.

The weather this winter is very strange and it will not get better any time soon.  Once we get south of Virginia, snow and cold weather becomes a calamity as if the gods are in a vengeance mode

Ed, I know what you mean, the public is not prepared for snow and ice in the south.

Sybil, count your blessings!  Our last little snow fall just won't melt - it's really, really cold outside, so I'm warming up reading blogs from Florida and California today.

Sybil, I can image what this seems like to a child who has never seen real snow before. Enjoy it will you can, and keep warm to avoid the flu.

Hi Jerry, I've had my flu shot and was around my daughter when she got a mild case of it.  I didn't get it but I've had bronchitis and a sinus infection.  Hopefully I'm going to be well for a while!

I actually heard about this event in Jacksonville on my local weather report. Unusual that it happens so infrequently. Cool change of pace.
