Granted, only 16 hours before this photo was taken; ice pellets, freezing rain, and sleet was falling from the sky.
But that’s just how life is in the Texas hill country. Sure, we have our occasional icepocalypses, but these are generally broken when the sun breaks through and the temperature rises to a pleasantly tolerable level. Which happened on Sunday of last week and gave my daughter and me an excuse to head out to one of our favorite local locations for mountain bike riding in Kendall County, Flat Rock Ranch.
The screen cap above only captures trails on the property’s Lower Loop. Throw the Upper Loop in and you have 27 miles of single track riding bliss with plenty of climbing, cruising, descending, and technical challenges.
Flat Rock Ranch is only 25 minutes from the destination community of Boerne, TX (where we make our home) and only 10 minutes from the quaint town of Comfort, TX (check out Bending Branch Winery and Singing Water Vineyards after strolling the historical downtown area).
But we digress...Flat Rock Ranch offers one of the best options for escaping into the outdoors in the area. Whether you are a trail runner, mountain bike racer or enthusiast, or just want to get out into the wild for a while, Flat Rock Ranch will not disappoint.
One note of caution though: the property is generally only open from January 1st through the end of October. And on a couple of weekends per year, is open only for trail run and mountain bike race competitors. Otherwise, it’s open 7 days a week, sunup to sundown; so if you are in the area and are craving some challenging and scenic mountain bike riding or trail running, come on out. Remember though, this is a working ranch and you may encounter the occasional cow or Angora goat out on the trail. Don’t worry though, they are used to the traffic.
