2015 Cost vs. Value Report by Remodeling Magazine.

The 2015 edition of Cost vs. Value Report by Remodeling Magazine is out and it compares the changes in job costs against Realtors’ perceptions of what those improvements will bring to a home’s resale price.

The report compares the average cost of 36 popular remodeling projects against the value of those projects at resale in 102 US markets. The remodeling projects are broken up into two categories:

Midrange projects such as new entry door, siding replacement, deck addition and backup generator.

Upscale projects such as bathroom addition, major kitchen remodel, master suite addition.

The report shows National results as well as nine regional results with further breakdown to individual municipal areas. The nine regional areas are:

  1. East North Central
  2. Mountain
  3. South Atlantic
  4. East South Central
  5. New England
  6. West North Central
  7. Middle Atlantic
  8. Pacific
  9. West South Central

The trends shown in the report show that costs rose consistently with values rising only half as often. Overall the estimated cost of a professional doing the work rose 4.22% compared to the 2014 report. Only five of the projects rated saw their cost to value ratio rise in the 2015 report and all from the midrange project group:

  • Roofing replacement
  • Garage door replacement
  • Steel door entry replacement
  • Vinyl siding replacement
  • Fiberglass entry replacement.
