The Washington Humane Society deserves a huge shout out for its service to the community in 2014. The WHS had a 10.7 percent increase in adoptions last year. It took in 10,540 animals and adopted out 3,387 animals. It also had a live release rate of 86.53 percent – which means animals sent to sanctuary, re-homed or involved in the community cat program.
The WHS is into marketing – just like Realtors! They have promotions throughout the year that reduce the adoption fee or fun marketing – like take two cats home for the price of one. Every animal that goes home with a new family gets a free first veterinary visit with one of the vets partnering with the WHS.
The WHS believes in bringing adoption opportunities to the community at large. The WHS often goes to locations around the DC area, Northern Virginia and Maryland to bring pets to potential adopters. For instance, the WHS does adoption events at restaurants, pet stores, and even Federal buildings so that people can see a variety of animals that match their particular lifestyle.
Last year the WHS adopted out 2199 cats, 1022 dogs, 35 rabbits, 90 rodents, 26 domestic birds, one chicken, and 14 creatures that fit into the “other category” – like reptiles. If you are looking for a dog who just wants to sit and look out the window all day, the WHS has a dog for you! Maybe you want a cat who knows how to play fetch – the WHS has one of those too! In short – they don’t just offer a variety of animals but a lot of variety within their animals. If you are living in the DC metro area and want a pet, check out the Washington Humane Society!
