Phone Separation May Make You Stupid

Has Your iPhone Made You Stupid

I just read an article on the Realtor Mag online titled "Phone Separation May Make You Stupid."  According to the article iPhone users performed better on puzzles when they had their iPhones with them or nearby.  Apparently being away from their (our) phones causes anxiety to such a degree that we can't concentrate or stay focused.

I must admit that I am a little anxious when I leave my phone at home or am separated from in some way so I won't argue with the author on that point.

Here's My Problem With the Study

As a solution to iPhone Stupidity, the article suggests that we keep our phones with us at times when we need to stay focused.  The irony of that is that cell phones themselves are distraction.  Instead of encouraging us to keep our smartphones glued to our hips, I think a better suggestion is to wean ourselves off of our phone to a degree in which we don't automatically go into panic mode when we realize we don't have our phones with us.

I don't know of any other professions where there is an incessant need to have a phone within millimeters of their person at all times.

Your Thoughts Please

So what do you think?

  • Should we be extra diligent to ensure that we have our phones with us at times when we need to stay focused?  OR
  • Shoud we wean ourselves off of our phones to a degree that it does not cause such panic and anxiety?

Hi Charita - I left my phone at home this morning, and it definitely made me more anxious. And since I also left my wallet, I'm probably already stupid :)

Charita, not sure if there's a difference between folks who need their phone for business, while others use it for personal pleasure and convenience.  Silly how over connected we've become.

I think we all need to be issued pacifiers when we buy a phone! I have to say that I am not a happy camper when I leave my phone behind. G-d forbid I were to lose it! Quick...throw some salt over your shoulder!! When I need to focus, I turn the phone off. It does drive me crazy to talk with someone who has to stop every 2 seconds to answer the phone or read their texts. The world won't end if you have one conversation at a time.

Dick I might not go back and get my phone, but I think I'd have to go back and get my wallet.

You're right Michael.  There probably isn't much difference.

Nina I got the feeling from the article that that just having the phone on our person relieved the anxiety so it may not matter whether it is on or off.  And oh heck yeah, I really dislike it when I'm talking with someone and they are checking messages or answering calls during our conversation.  Arghhh!
