Tomorrow I am having a minor in and out surgery and I mentioned it to my next door neighbor. She had invited me to something on Friday and I said it depended on how I felt, so that is why I even mentioned it. This morning she walked over with a huge basket filled with homemade bread, homemade BBQ pulled pork, fresh fruit, cheese and crackers, teas and hot chocolate, and two slices of peach pie for my husband and I to enjoy tomorrow when I get back.
WOW! What an inspiration she is to me. I will aspire to be such a caring neighbor.
Here are some other ideas for being a good neighbor:
1. When a next door neighbor goes away on vacation, mow their lawn or make arrangement to have their lawn mowed and water plants if needed. Pick up any free papers that may get thrown in their driveway.
2. Share your bounty of garden vegetables or flowers. Just pop by and bring them some!
3. Help any elderly neighbor by offering to pick up their groceries if they give you a list.
4. When a new neighbor moves in, drop by with some baked goodies and a card with your name & phone number.
5. Walk your neighborhood and stop and say hi or introduce yourself to any you don't know.
6. Refer good service providers to anyone who mentions they are in need. Tell others about the great job a contractor or lawn service company did for you.
7. Have a neighborhood yard sale by setting a date, advertising on Craigslist and put up directional signs coming into the neighborhood. Have a list of streets for everyone who is participating.
8. Host a Happy Hour and have neighbors bring an appetizer
9. Start a neighborhood wine tasting circle and have it at a different house every month.
10. Lend a helping hand if you hear of someone in need. It could be a a sick parent, a recent death or divorce and someone who would appreciate a card, a visit, or a meal.
Be a good neighbor and I hope you are lucky enough to have some good neighbors too!
