EARTHQUAKE!

You've Just Been "RED TAGGED" and

"DISPLACED". Now What?

In my first post: Shame On You! Shame On You! Shame On You! you were introduced to some pretty stark and sobering facts about what could possibly happen to you and your family should you become victims of an Earthquake or any natural or man made disaster for that matter if you were not adequately prepared.

In my second post: Earthquake's Are Real. Is Your Home "Green Tag Worthy" For A Disaster? we discussed the things you could do to protect your family and your home in the event of an earthquake.

In my third post: Earthquake Victims That Are Yellow Tagged Consider Yourselves Lucky  we discussed what happens to folks who suffered light to moderate structural damage but were given a window of time in which to make the necessary repairs and corrections and were still allowed to live in their homes while doing so.

In this post I am going to discuss what happens to those unfortunate souls who are informed with a RED TAG  that they have been DISPLACED and can no longer occupy their home and in all likelihood cannot even go back into their home to gather their personal belongings and perhaps even have to face the possibility that their home is subject to a total loss and could be demolished and hauled away contents and all.

Unlike wind, fire and flooding events that can and have wiped out entire communities Earthquakes can and usually do give you a second chance if proper proactive and preventative measures are implemented. Next to loss of life the biggest tragedy and challenge in the aftermath of any disaster is total loss of the use of your home aka, Displacement.

RED TAG: Here you the homeowner are dead in the water when you are given the news that your home was condemned by FEMA, California Office of Emergency Services (OES), Health and Safety and/or building departments and you and your family are not allowed to re-occupy it; Perhaps never.

Oh and by the way you unfortunately Displaced folks  will be looking for a relative or friend to bunk up with or a motel to check into if you're lucky enough to find one.

Additionally, those so unfortunate to have become "Displaced" will probably even have to get used to driving a distance to get to their favorite store, doctor, dentist, etc. Getting your children to and from school could be a challenge unto itself.  That’s if the school was not too damaged and deemed unsafe in which case children will have to attend another school/s which as parents know can be quite traumatic for children and extremely stressful for parents on top of all the other hoops you'll be jumping through.

Finally but not completely you will have to add to an already agonizing experience; that of dealing with not so friendly or sympathetic insurance adjusters and claims, contractors, permits, inspectors, utility companies and the list goes on and on.

Those Displaced will be in for a very disruptive, traumatic if not horrific experience that could go on for months and regrettably in some cases for years and will cost them as well as we taxpayers billions of dollars by the time the dust all settles.

Now for a little MORAL-SUASION. It doesn't have to be that way. You don't have to become another statistic or burden to society and dependent on others if you just take a few proactive measures to protect your family and your home.

In fact it's down right selfish if you don't take the time to protect you, your family and your home. Why should your neighbors be responsible for your lackadaisical ways and irresponsibility? They'll have enough to worry about just trying to take care of their own families and property.

Do you feel a sense of passion in my words? I surely hope so. I'm not a scare monger. I'm a disaster response contractor with 3 decades of experience working in the aftermaths of crisis ridden neighborhoods where I've personally seen families living in their driveways on FEMA issued army cots while burning remnants from their homes in a 55 gallon steel drum just to keep warm while awaiting the RED CROSS food truck.

My intention is to get you off of your derriere and doing something now. Not later. If you haven't read my previous posts please take a few moments to do so. There are things you can do to protect your family and your home. Please take the time to do them NOW!
