What's in a name? An email name?

What's in a name? We've all heard that question at some point in life, but I have a different twist on it today. What's in an email name? I hadn't thought much about that until a friend was making comments about how unprofessional a Realtor's email address looked on a piece of mail.

All local Realtors in our community can have an email address that is generated by the multiple listing service. A lot have taken that option, and it's immediately recognized by anyone who is a part of that service, but those who are selling or buying are unlikely to recognized the domain name. So it is kind of a moot point.

The idea of professional vs unprofessional emails really made me think. Early last year, I moved to have anyone who works with me adopt a xxxxx@cbginc.net email, and it has worked well for us. But, here again, was it necessary? I've bounced that around all year in 2014, but yesterday may have answered my question.

I'm working with a client who has his own lender. I asked the lenders name, and he couldn't remember, but he had her office number in his phone. That seemed odd, but I can see how that would happen. She was a referral from his brother.

Then I asked for a pre-qualification letter. She tried to fax it to me four times with no success. That seemed odd, but fax machines can be an issue at times. Those of us who use a web-based fax wouldn't face that. She said my fax machine wouldn't accept it. Then it was "I'm getting a message that your box is full." I have two faxes. One is online and one is right beside my desk. I have a ton of storage in my online fax and I don't have my desktop fax set to store faxes. She had both numbers.

Then she emailed it to me. No success. Emailed again. Still no letter. Finally, my client received an email from her with the letter. He forwarded it to me and I printed it. When I was reading it over I noticed two things that stood out like a flashing light. Her email ended in Hotmail, and her office number was a cell phone.

For the first time, it struck me. She didn't look like a professional lender because she was using a teeny-bopper email address and a cell phone as her office phone. Does it really matter? I don't know. Does it? That's my "not fully resolved" question. Does it matter to the masses or is this much ado about nothing?

I still have an AOL email address. I've had it since day one of AOL. I get about $2 million a year in business because I still have the same email address. I have others of course.

So, I'll put you down for a "it doesn't matter", Dee. 8-) I do see a lot of those still.

Hi Mike - It is an excellent opportunity to extend branding, and shouldn't be passed by, since as branding goes, it's incredibly cheap. We've been using @maryanddick.com since forever.

I changed my wweb site and the host deleted my E-Mail and gave me a new one.  I deleted their service and got a new one.  I had told them the E-Mail HAD to remain the same.

Oh  my, William. I can't imagine having all of my emails deleted. I reference them from years ago still.

I am with you, Mike.  Hotmail?  Really.  I did not know they were still around;  oh, wait, yes, I did, because I have tried unsuccessfully to email larger files to someone with a hotmail address and guess what?  They wouldn't go through.

There's another good reason to get a professional address, Susan.

I say as long as whatever format of email you use works for you stick with it unless it becomes an obstacle as it seemed to in your example. At first I thought you were going to talk about unprofessional sounding email addresses which may call into question the professionalism of the agent/broker or business person utilizing it in which case I would agree that we shouldn't have crazy wording in our email addresses that may lead people to assume negatively on us or our business.

It matters when it prevents people from doing business! And clearly that was (almost) the case here. I like having my email with mris.com .. I do know that the public is not likely to recognize it but it's also clear to them that it is not a "teeny-bopper" one.

I don't think the extension matters so much (gmail, hotmail, et al) but I do think that when you have sassyrealestatepro@...  that it adds a certain, something.

Hi, Mike.  I'm being contrary.  Sorry.

Fax machines are so last millennium!  Get over them already!

Using a Hey Oh Hell! email address?  I would say don't do it, except that we have a top producer here in Tallahassee who still uses AOL as her primary email.

As for Hotmail, Gmail, Live, etc.  -  I use them all.  I only give my domain based email to a select few, to keep it free from Spam.

phone doesn't matter and as long as the address name is reasonable I don't think it really matters. But if you address is EatingRipeBanannas@aol.com you might want a little more professional name like your name@aol.com

While I use gmail, on printed material I always use my domain name in the email.  It's catchy and memorable.

If one projects themselves as a professional I believe they need an email address that reflects that professional status.

Mike, what matters is that whatever they use is effective across all platforms.  If not, they are not effective and then, it matters big time.

Mike - I would have to agree with Kathleen and some of the others who have commented. What matters most is whether the email and phone numbers are effective, meaning can anyone email or contact you through these devices at any time, without any issues. If so, then I would say they are working, and it doesn't matter what they are.

I hope that it does not matter, my email is gmail and my two office numbers that I give out to the public are both google voice numbers.

I used to have more solid email addresses and phone numbers until I had a dispute with my isp ten years ago and decided to keep with something that would not be changed every time I swithched isp's or phone companies.
