ActiveRain's Quest for the RIGHT Answer

By
Real Estate Technology with ActiveRain

Back in November, we made some significant updates to the Question & Answer site on ActiveRain.  The results have been impressive, we are seeing hundreds of answers every day and the traffic to that area has increased by 12X.

But, we still feel like something is missing.

Great conversations are sprouting up just like they do on our blog posts, but are agents who come to ActiveRain looking with serious questions really finding the "best" answer??

As a great example, check out this question:

The community provided 104 answers on this single question.  And while some of the answers were "Liked" by the community, it feels like a lot more people could have added their input for a more definitive answer.

A New Direction for ActiveRain Q&A

So, we are going to make a shift in our focus when it comes to Q&A within the community.  Instead of trying to create conversations around questions, we are going to set out to find the best answer.

  • Identifying the best answers on a question
  • Make it so a great question can be an ongoing resource, not just a 1-day conversation
  • Help agents to find questions with great business insight

To do this, we've made a couple of changes (with several more to come) on how the Q&A section works.

  • Members can "Upvote" the answers that they think are most helpful to the community.
  • Each question page now presents answers with the most upvotes on the top. Previously, they were displayed in chronological order

The Right Answer is Up To You!

The next time you're in our Q&A section, we want you to really seek out those answers that you think are well thought out and will be impactful to future readers.

MORE IMPORTANTLY... Share your knowledge.  You are an essential part of this community.  Don't just write a fluffy answer to earn some points, provide an answer that will make a difference to somebody else.

I upvote for the upvote.  However, I would suggeest only displaying the top 1-3 upvoted answers but keep them all sequential / chronological still so we can keep track of what has / has not been read.

That's a much better system for people looking to find the answer to the question.  Consensus should deem it the "best answer".

I'm totally in favor of the Q/A. However, I would still like to see it reach out to the public if AR could figure out how to stifle the SPAM. There are a lot of consumers out there constantly looking for good information and legitimate answers to their questions.

I'm very glad to see these changes in ActiveRain! This will also help find the "best" answer without stepping on toes and "stirring the pot."

Sounds like a great idea!  You just never know when "best" answer will help you out of a difficult situation.

Which answer do I like the best?  They can be all so good.  Will have to play around with this.

Chris, the first thing that comes to mind is that we are all so different.  Each one of us may be looking for a different type of answer.  Most of us read all of the answers and take a piece of each response to form the answer that works for us.

I remember when Trulia had the questions and answers...the best answer and then just followed by answers.....I wonder are they still doing that? Or did that get phased out? Or Transferred to AR??,Endre

The Q and A Section is a great place to learn and to share knowledge.  Sometimes I get the answer that best fits me by learning from all the combined responses. Determining the BEST answer? Hmmm ... An interesting concept. Keep up the good work ... Q&A is a valuable resource to all of us.

The Q & A feature is wonderful.  I don't know how I could possible say which answer is best.  It often depends upon the question and the need at the current time.  Often just seeing the variety of answers gives me a more well rounded approach and that benefits me the most.  I am still trying to get the answer to how to fix my photo so it does not display a double or 1.5. I didn't change it, it happened during a recent upgrade.

No answer is right for every situation, having multiple contributions gives a more balanced choice for the person posing the question.

If I represent the Seller; I tend to stick around much longer than if I am meeting the my Buyer. My Buyers have to learn that my time is valuable and 15 minutes late is as long as I will wait without a call or text...

It's been interesting watching how the Q&A has changed and become more of an aspect of the Rain.
