Endre, I am not quite sure what you mean by "protected", here they are a highly valuable resource that we manage well until maturity at 80-100 years then it makes very high quality lumber and veneer.  During that life cycle they also provide great mast for many wildlife species including deer, turkey, and squirrels.

 Good morning Bob. Whitetail deer are in abundance in this area as well. I have to play at deer resistant flowers as they will mow everything down in sight.
